Stephanie Jones ’05 rejoined the UNH women’s ice hockey program in the 2006-07 season as an assistant coach and was elevated to associate head coach prior to the 2015-16 season. The 2022-23 season will be Stephanie’s 17th as a UNH coach and 21st year overall with the program, including four as a standout student-athlete.
Stephanie helped guide New Hampshire to four consecutive NCAA appearances (2007-08-09-10) in which the Wildcats were Hockey East regular-season and tournament champions in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
In her tenure, a total of 13 Wildcats have been named to the Hockey East All-League First Team, seven to the Second Team, two to the Third Team and seven to the All-Rookie Team.In 2010, Kelly Paton was honored as Hockey East co-Player of the Year and was one of three finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which is presented annually to the top women's college hockey player in the country.
The native of Kimberley, British Columbia led UNH to one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2008, when the ‘Cats tied the program’s single-season wins record with 33; advanced to the Frozen Four; were ranked No. 1 in the nation for eight weeks; ended the year #1 in the nation in penalty kill, #2 in offense, #2 in defense and #2 in power play; broke six Hockey East team records and tied two others en route to Hockey East’s first undefeated season.
A four-year letterwinner spanning the 2002-05 seasons, Stephanie played in 142 career games – four less than the school record – and averaged 1.00 points per game in her career with 142 points (78 goals, 64 assists). With those numbers, she is No. 11 in goals and No. 18 in points on UNH’s career leaderboards.
Stephanie led the Wildcats in goals three times with 17 as a rookie in ’02, 22 as a sophomore in ’03 and 24 as a senior in ’05. She also led the team in points as sophomore with 37 and recorded a personal-best 42 points as a senior captain, when she ranked No. 20 in the nation in goals per game as well as No. 16 in game-winning goals.
Her collegiate accolades included Hockey East Player of the Year (2005), New England All-Star Team (2005), Hockey East First Team All-Star (’03 and ’05), ECAC Eastern League All-Rookie Team (’02), UNH women’s hockey Karyn Bye MVP Award (’05) and UNH women’s hockey Fan Favorite Award (’05).
While skating for UNH, Stephanie was also a member of the Canada National Women Under-22 Team that competed at the European Air Canada Cup in January 2004. She also participated at the 2003 Hockey Canada U-22 National Development Camp.
Stephanie began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Colgate University in the 2005-06 season. Her responsibilities included assisting in all recruiting, on and off ice coaching with emphasis on forwards and special teams, academic advising, managing players’ well-being, and creating and directing the off-ice conditioning program.
