Wildcats Down Sharks, Sweep LIU with 6-1 Win

Six different ‘Cats scored in the non-conference win
DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team skated to a 6-1 win over Long Island University (6-10-1, 4-8-1 NEWHA) on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 4) at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-New Hampshire opened the scoring late in the first period when Josie Linn (Excelsior, Minn.) won the puck off the half-wall before connecting a feed to Addison Spitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) in the slot, who fired home past LIU's Clara Kammholz with 11.5 seconds to play.
-The Wildcats doubled their lead 5:10 into the middle frame as Nina Rossi (Pittsgrove, N.J.) skated into the LIU zone before firing from the high slot, beating Kammholz to make it 2-0. Sadie Makokis (St. Albert, Alberta) earned the assist following a successful poke check in the Wildcats' own zone to set up the play.
-Long Island broke onto the scoreboard 3:06 later when Crosby Wildfong fired from the left face-off circle, pinging the puck off the cross bar to cut the lead in half.
-New Hampshire regained their two-goal edge over the Sharks with 9:33 to play in the second, when Kelly Harty (Billerica, Mass.) tapped in a Sydney Leonard (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) feed in the crease.
-The Wildcats netted their third goal of the period with 2:05 to play in the frame when Linn settled a pass from Spitz in the neutral zone, before outpacing the LIU defensemen to the left face-off circle and firing on net to make it a 4-1 affair.
-UNH extended their lead midway through the third period, when Danika Botterill (Portage La Prairie, Manitoba) passed it to Makokis in the high slot, who fired on net and connected with the twine to make it 5-1.
-Leonard found her first goal of the night and second goal of the weekend 1:50 later after putting away a loose puck in the low slot, bringing about the final 6-1 tally.

-On special teams, the Wildcats went two for five on the power-play, giving the Wildcats their third game with multiple power-play goals in the last four games.
-On defense, 13 different players landed a positive plus/minus rating, paced by a plus-two game from seven different players.
-In net, Noemi Martinez (Glen Ridge, N.J.) closed her night in net denying 24-of-25 shots faced, good for a .960 save percentage.
