Martinez's Record-Tying Effort Garners Hockey East Weekly Award

AMESBURY, Mass. – Sophomore Noemi Martinez (Glen Ridge, N.J.) of the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was named the Stop it Goaltending Goaltender of the Week by Hockey East on Monday. It is the second time this season Martinez has received this award.
Martinez matched the UNH program record for saves in a game with a 52-save effort in the 1-1 tie against No. 15/13 Boston College at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex on Feb. 22.
She also tied the benchmark for saves in a single period when she stopped 22 shots in the third period.
New Hampshire begins postseason play Feb. 26 (7 p.m.) with a Hockey East opening round game against Merrimack College at the Whitt that will be televised on NESN and broadcast on ESPN+. CLICK HERE to buy tickets or call (603) 862-4000.
Martinez stopped all 11 shots in the first period and was also perfect in the second stanza with 15 more saves. Following her 22-save performance in the third period, Martinez made four saves in the five-minute overtime session to send the game to a shootout, where she stopped two of three BC attempts but UNH was edged 1-0 in three rounds.
Martinez kept the Eagles scoreless on three power plays.
The record of 52 saves was established Feb. 3, 2011 by Kayley Hermon at Boston University.
The high of 22 saves in a period was set Feb. 4, 2001 by Jen Huggon vs. Brown University and also matched earlier this season by Sedona Blair at the University of Maine on Jan. 25.
In seven games (six starts) this season, Martinez has a 1.50 GAA, .952 save percentage and one shutout with a 2-1-2 record.
UNH has received seven of the 18 weekly goalie awards this season. Martinez was previously honored Nov. 4. Classmate Sedona Blair has received this accolade five times.
