PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team fell to Providence College (4-7-1, 2-3-1 HEA) on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 8) at Schneider Arena, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Friars.
New Hampshire netted the first goal of the game late in the opening frame, when Danika Botterill (Portage La Prairie, Manitoba) collected a Nina Rossi (Pittsgrove, N.J.) face-off win before firing from the high slot, beating Providence's Hope Walinski top-shelf glove-side to give the 'Cats the 1-0 lead. Through 20 minutes, UNH outshot Providence 10-9, with three shots from Addison Finn (Stillwater, Minn.) setting the pace.
Providence found the equalizer early in the middle period, when Emma Hofbauer collected the loose puck in the neutral zone, outskating the Wildcat defenders and striking on the breakaway chance to make it a 1-1 contest. The Friars took their first lead of the game just over two minutes later, when Kayle Kutes cleaned up on a rebound in the slot, beating Noemi Martinez (Glen Ridge, N.J.) to give Providence the 2-1 advantage. The Friars found their third goal of the period with 7:50 to go, when Molly Farace collected a turnover in the New Hampshire zone, finding Sarah Davies, who ripped it top shelf to make it 3-1 through 40 minutes of play.
Providence earned their fourth goal of the game just 52 seconds into the third period, when Jessie Pellerin put away the loose puck in front to extend the Friars' lead to three goals. With just over a minute to go, Providence scored on the empty net to bring about the final 5-1 tally.
Botterill scored the lone goal for the Wildcats in the loss, while Rossi accounted for the other point and paced the team's offensive output with seven tries on net. Defensively Botterill and Lucie Legro (Brentwood, N.H.) led the Wildcats with two blocked shots while Martinez stopped 26-of-30 tries, good for a .867 save percentage.
