BURLINGTON, Vt. — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team skated past the University of Vermont (4-7-2, 1-3-1 HEA) on Friday evening (Nov. 14) at the Gutterson Fieldhouse, winning in a 4-3 decision over the Catamounts.
Danika Botterill (Portage La Prairie, Manitoba) got the offense going late in the first period for the Wildcats, ripping the puck from the left face-off circle while on the power-play, beating Vermont's Ellie Simmons to make it a 1-0 contest. Vermont knotted things up 3:27 later, when the Catamounts' Morgann Skoda found the back of the net for a power-play goal of her own. Just 48 seconds after, the Wildcats regained their lead when Addison Spitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) fired a shot from outside the face-off circle, finding a lane and beating Simmons' right shoulder for the 2-1 advantage.
UNH doubled the lead early in the middle frame when Julia Cabral (Lee, N.H.) found Kate Sullivan (Hingham, Mass.) alone, who then skated to the net and fired blocker-side to make it 3-1. Cabral found her first goal of the season midway through the period after rifling a shot from the right face-off circle, beating Simmons' blocker and extending the 'Cats lead to 4-1.
The Wildcats let one by midway through the third period, when Vermont's Oona Havana connected on the power-play, cutting the New Hampshire lead back down to a pair. Vermont found their second score of the period with 2:14 to play on a Morgann Skoda try, netting her second of the game to bring the lead to a single goal, but the Wildcats' defense held on in the closing minutes to win 4-3.
Seven different Wildcats logged a point in the win, including two-point efforts from Cabral, Aurora Kahlert (Maple Ridge, British Columbia), and Sydney Leonard (St. Bonifacius, Minn.). Additionally, on offense, 13 different 'Cats landed a shot on net, paced by a five-shot showing from Botterill, while nine players logged a positive plus/minus rating, led by Alex Therien (Ottawa, Ontario) with a plus-three. In net, junior netminder Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) 23-of-26 shots faced, good for a .885 save percentage.
