DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team skated past Merrimack College (2-7-1, 0-3-0 HEA) on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 1) at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex, posting a 5-2 performance against the Warriors.
New Hampshire jumped out to a quick lead over the Warriors in the opening period, when freshman Kristen Hartman (Newmarket, Ontario) collected a Sydney Leonard (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) face-off win before firing on net, beating Merrimack's Adreanna Doucette on her glove-side to take a 1-0 lead. The 'Cats doubled their lead 12:42 into the first, when Kelly Harty (Billerica, Mass.) took a pass from Josie Linn (Excelsior, Minn.) in the face-off circle, firing past Doucette's blocker-side to make it 2-0. Addison Spitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) earned the secondary assist on the score.
The Wildcats extended their lead just 45 seconds into the middle frame, when Linn took a feed from Spitz in the slot, pocketing the puck on a tap-in try in the corner of the crease to make it a 3-0 affair. Freshman Aurora Kahlert (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) found Spitz to set up the scoring play. Merrimack got one back 7:28 into the period to make it 3-1, but the Wildcats quickly regained the three-goal advantage 1:44 later, when Charlie Rauch (Ramsey, N.J.) found the loose puck in the crease from a Courtney Lilley (Wakefield, Mass.) try, cashing it for her first goal of the season.
Merrimack struck again early in the third period, when Mady Cipolla collected the puck off a bounce from the half-wall, beating the defense and firing into the net, making it a 4-2 game with 17:37 to play. Midway through the frame, Spitz collected a face-off win from Linn, sniping the puck past Doucette for her third point of the game and fifth on the weekend, bringing about the final 5-2 score.
Nine different players earned a point in the win, paced by one goal, two assist showings from both Spitz and Linn. Additionally, ten different players logged a positive plus/minus score, with four players logging a +2 rating. Defensively, junior goaltender Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) stopped 25-of-27 shots faced, posting a .926 save percentage, while Addison Finn (Stillwater, Minn.) collected a team-high six blocked shots.
