DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team was edged by Harvard University on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex, falling to the Crimson 2-1.
The 'Cats got onto the board midway through the opening frame, when senior forward Alyson Hush (Scarborough, Ontario) collected a rebound from Nina Rossi (Pittsgrove, N.J.), before firing a back-handed shot past Harvard's Ainsley Tuffy to give UNH the 1-0 advantage. New Hampshire outpaced Harvard on offense through the first 20 minutes, outshooting the Crimson 11-10.
Harvard knotted the game 9:14 into the second period, when Angelica Megdanis settled a shot from Scout Oudemool before firing on net, beating the Wildcats defense to tie it 1-1. In the middle frame, the Crimson led the 'Cats 12-10 on the shot chart.
New Hampshire opened the third period with a pair of power-play opportunities, but neither were successful, leaving the 1-1 score intact. With just 3:49 to play in the game, Harvard's Carla McSweeney found a lane, skating to the goal on a breakaway opportunity and cashing the puck, bringing about the final 2-1 score.
Sophomore Addison Spitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) tied for the team lead in shots with four while freshman Aurora Kahlert (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) potted four tries on net while posting a team-leading three blocks.
