Juodikis Scores 50th Career Goal in Loss to Maine

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior forward and captain Kira Juodikis (LaSalle, Ontario) scored her 50th career goal but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was defeated 4-1 by the University of Maine in Friday's Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.
Sophomore goaltender Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made 22 saves and exited the game when Maine took a 3-0 lead at 13:41 of the second period. Classmate Noemi Martinez (Glen Ridge, N.J.) stopped all nine shots she faced in 22:32.
Maine goalie Kiia Lahtinen made 18 of her 33 saves in the third period. Mikayla Boarder and Stephanie Jacob both finished with a goal and assist. Sam Morrison and Lila Shea scored the other two goals.
UNH moves to 10-10-1 overall and 6-8-0 in Hockey East while Maine is now 5-16-0, 5-10-0.

FIRST PERIOD
- Maine recorded a 13-8 shot advantage in the scoreless opening stanza.
SECOND PERIOD
- The Black Bears scored three goals and generated an 18-7 edge in shots in the second period.
- Maine took a 1-0 lead at 6:28 when Morrison collected a centering pass in the low slot and shoveled the puck under the crossbar.
- UNH pressured in the 11th minute but Shea Verrier (Reading, Mass.) was denied at the doorstep twice by Lahtinen.
- The visitors scored goals 28 seconds apart to quickly extend the advantage to 3-0. Boarder's shot from the inner-right circle sailed inside the left post at 13:13 and then Shea corralled the puck in the slot and wristed a shot inside the left post at 13:41.
- Martinez entered the game and stopped six shots the rest of the period to keep the 'Cats within three goals.
THIRD PERIOD
- New Hampshire controlled the final 20 minutes to create a 19-4 shot advantage.
- Juodikis netted her milestone goal at 3:27 to lift UNH within 3-1. Brooke Hammer (Commerce Township, Mich.) skated onto a loose puck on the left half-boards and sent a pass to the slot, where Juodikis redirected a low shot inside the right post. Verrier, who sent the puck into the attack zone, was also credited with an assist.
- With nine minutes remaining, Lahtinen made three saves in a six-second span by denying Hammer from the right point, Juodikis from the left circle and Andi Calderone (Kirkland, Quebec) from the top of the right circle.
- UNH went on its second power play of the game at 12:07 but Lahtinen turned aside both shots to keep the margin at 3-1.
- The Wildcats pulled Martinez in favor of an extra skater with 4:09 on the clock and sustained pressure until Stephanie Jacob shot wide of the empty net for an icing call with 3:03 to play.
- After the ensuing faceoff, Jacob gained possession at the defensive blue line and advanced to center ice before sending a shot into the empty net for a 4-1 lead at 17:07.
- Martinez reentered the game but then returned to the bench at 17:25.
- Chavonne Truter (Uxbridge, Ontario) was denied by Lahtinen at 19:14.
- A neutral-zone faceoff forced Martinez back in the net at 19:26, but she returned to the bench four seconds later.
- Maine was whistled for a penalty with 15 seconds remaining and Verrier's shot moments later was stopped by Lahtinen.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Juodikis is the first Wildcat to reach the 50 career goal milestone since Jonna Curtis (2013-17) finished with 54.
- Juodikis has 50 goals and 35 assists for 85 points in 122 games.
- Juodikis leads the team in goals (six) and points (12) this season.
- Verrier also has 12 points on five goals and seven assists.
- Hammer also has seven assists.
- Verrier finished with a team-high 12 faceoff wins.
- Maddie Crowley-Cahill (Haverhill, Mass.) led all skaters with three blocks.
- In four Hockey East league games (two starts), Martinez has stopped 77 of 80 shots for a 1.06 GAA and .963 save percentage.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Maine finished with a 35-34 shot advantage and 34-26 edge in faceoffs.
- Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.
