Gagne is one of 14 nominees for the prestigious honor
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – University of New Hampshire men's hockey senior captain Alex Gagne (Bedford, N.H.) is one of 14 nominees for the prestigious Hockey Humanitarian Award.
The award, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary season, is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen — a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism.
Finalists for the 2025 Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February. The 2025 recipient will be announced on Friday, April 11 during the NCAA Men's Frozen Four weekend in St. Louis.
"Alex's leadership, dedication and commitment to both his team and the community make him a standout candidate for this prestigious honor," said UNH head coach Mike Souza. "Throughout his four years at UNH, Alex has been deeply involved in community service initiatives, demonstrating a true commitment to making a difference. Whether it's volunteering his time to local organizations or helping fundraise for important causes, Alex has always gone above and beyond to give back. His commitment to his teammates, his school, and his community is truly inspiring, and he has set an exceptional example for what it means to be a leader, both on the ice and in the community."
In November of 2024, led by Gagne, the men's hockey team raised $10,880 dollars during Movember for Prostate Cancer research at Mass General Brigham. Through his leadership all the members of the team participated in encouraging people to donate and in a display of solidarity and awareness every player on the team had their heads shaved in front of the public in the lobby of the Whittemore Center after the game versus RIT on Nov. 30.
Gagne is a member of the Executive Board of the UNH Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has served as the Community Liaison. He has been a part of the annual Hoops for Hunger 3-on-3 basketball tournament. This year the event raised $400 for the Cornucopia Food Pantry in Durham. He was also a part of collecting 2,000 non-perishable food items for the Cornucopia Food Pantry through the America East Food Frenzy program.
As a member of SAAC he contributes to the annual Bench Out the Stigma event which raises money for mental health awareness.
During his time at UNH, Gagne has led his teammates as they deliver donations from the team's annual teddy bear toss to Mass General Brigham Wentworth Douglass to brighten the holidays of local children. This year he also delivered winter coats that were collected at a men's hockey game to the UNH Basic Needs program which provides coats to students who cannot afford them.
Gagne has won the team's Whoop Snively Citizenship Award twice for everything he does for the local community.
As a leader of the team, Gagne is only the sixth player ever to be a two-time captain in the 100-year history of the men's hockey program and the first in 20 years. He was also an alternate captain as a sophomore.
As an athlete, Gagne is one of the top defensemen in Hockey East. He was a 2023-24 Third Team Hockey East All-Star and was the runner-up for the Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman Award. He was a New England All-Star and won the team's Roger A. LeClerc Most Valuable Player Award and the Rod Langway Best Defenseman Award. He has won four Hockey East weekly awards during his career.
The Sport Management & Leadership major is a three-time member of the Hockey East All-Academic Team. Gagne was named to the 2024 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
The No. 18 University of New Hampshire men's hockey team (10-6-3, 2-5-2 Hockey East) returns to action with a home-and-home series versus No. 11 Boston University (11-7-1, 7-3-1 Hockey East) on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 17-18.
