Truter Scores Goal in 4-1 Semifinal Loss at #13 Northeastern

BOSTON – Senior forward Chavonne Truter (Uxbridge, Ontario) scored a third-period goal to lift the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team into a 1-1 tie, but 13th-ranked Northeastern University scored three goals in the last two minutes, including a pair of empty-netters, to record a 4-1 victory in Wednesday's Hockey East semifinal at Matthews Arena.
The three-goal margin was not indicative of how close the game was overall, as it was scoreless through 40-plus minutes and tied for 46 of the 60 minutes
Freshman goaltender Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was credited with 28 saves and had two goals against in 59:13.
NU goalie Gwyneth Philips also made 28 saves. Lily Shannon broke the 1-1 tie on a power-play goal with 1:45 remaining and added an empty-netter with 13 seconds to play
UNH, the tourney No. 3 seed with a 14-11-2 league record, ends the season with an 18-16-2 record. NU improves to 25-10-3 and advances to the league title game.

- Both teams recorded nine shots in the scoreless opening 20 minutes.
- The Wildcats blocked 13 shot attempts before the first intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
- Northeastern had a 7-6 shot advantage in the scoreless second stanza.
- UNH apparently took a 1-0 lead with 1.8 seconds on the clock when the puck went off the left skate of Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario) inside the right post into the net. The Huskies challenged the call, however, and after review the goal was disallowed because of a kicking motion.
THIRD PERIOD
- NU had a 16-14 shot advantage in the final frame as the teams combined to score five goals.
- The Wildcats had an early scoring chance generated by the forecheck of Kira Juodikis (LaSalle, Ontario) in the left corner. Kelly corralled the loose puck at the left doorstep but was denied by Philips.
- Peyton Anderson tucked a shot inside the right post to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead at 1:26.
- NU was whistled for a five-minute major penalty at 2:53, which gave UNH a 5-on-3 power play for 43 seconds. Philips made one save in that span and six more on the extended power play to preserve the Huskies' 1-0 lead.
- An attempted outlet pass ricocheted off Truter's skate and she gained possession in the right circle, where her knuckling wrist shot went of Philips' glove into the net to tie the score, 1-1, at 13:27.
- The Huskies went on their fourth power play of the game at 16:16 and scored with one second left on the skater advantage when Shannon shoveled in a rebound from the top of the crease.
- UNH pulled Blair in favor of an extra skater with 1:23 remaining but Skylar Irving scored into an empty net 14 seconds later to give the home team a 3-1 lead at 19:01.
- Blair reentered the game but returned to the bench with 36 seconds to play but NU cleared the puck out of the zone and Shannon deposited a shot into the empty net with 13 seconds left.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Northeastern finished with a 32-29 shot advantage and 30-22 edge in the faceoff circle.
- UNH was 0-for-3 on the power play and NU went 1-for-4.
- The Wildcats were credited with 19 blocked shots and the Huskies had 14.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Blair, the reigning Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Week in Hockey East, extended her UNH single-season saves record to 917.
- Blair's league postseason awards include Third Team All-Star and All-Rookie Team. She was runner-up for the Rookie of the Year award.
- Truter became the fourth 'Cat to reach double digits in the goal column with her 10th of the season.
- Rae Breton (Brighton, Ontario), who entered the game tied for second in the nation in blocked shots, was credited with four blocks.
- Breton and Juodikis were also 2023-24 Third Team All-Stars.
- Kyla Bent (Halifax, Nova Scotia) also blocked four shots.
- Marina Alvarez (Center Moriches, N.Y.) finished with three blocks,.
- Shea Verrier (Reading, Mass.) led the Wildcats with 10 faceoff wins.
- The end of the 2023-24 season marks the end of nine UNH Wildcat careers: Bent, Breton, Kelly, Mikah Baptiste (Ottawa, Ontario), Annie Berry (Milton, Mass.), Jada Christian (Caledon East, Ontario), Charli Kettyle (Perth, Ontario), Brianna Legros (New Liskeard, Ontario) and Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec).
- UNH head coach Hilary Witt was runner-up for the Hockey East Coach of the Year award.
- Witt led the 'Cats to the most league wins since 2013 and most overall wins since 2020.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 79-70-10 lifetime record against Northeastern.
- All three regular-season games were decided by one goal, including the last two in overtime.
