Five Wildcats on 2024 NHL Opening Night Rosters

DURHAM, N.H. – Five former University of New Hampshire men's hockey players have earned spots on NHL Opening Night rosters: forward James van Riemsdyk (Columbus Blue Jackets), defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (Washington Capitals), defenseman Brett Pesce (New Jersey Devils), goalie Casey DeSmith (Dallas Stars) and forward Warren Foegele (Los Angeles Kings).
James van Riemsdyk (2007-09) will make his debut for the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday versus the Minnesota Wild on ESPN+ at 8:00 p.m. This season will be his first with the Blue Jackets after playing his first three seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, followed by six seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, a return to the Flyers for five seasons, and most recently a season with the Boston Bruins. van Riemsdyk has 311 goals and 318 assists for 629 points during his career. He has played in 82 playoff games with a total of 21 goals and 15 assists for 36 points.
Trevor van Riemsdyk (2011-14) is going into his 11th season in the NHL, fifth with the Washington Capitals. The Capitals play their first game on Saturday versus the New Jersey Devils on ESPN+ at 7:00 p.m. Throughout his career he has scored 24 goals and has 102 assists in the regular season for 126 points. During his playoff career has played in 35 games with two goals and two assists. van Riemsdyk has also played for the Chicago Blackhawks from 2014 to 2017 and the Carolina Hurricanes from 2017 to 2020. He won the Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2015.
Pesce (2012-2015) is going into first season with the New Jersey Devils after nine seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. During his career, Pesce has scored 39 goals and posted 159 assists for 198 points. He has played in 57 playoff games with a total of five goals and 16 assists for 21 points.
DeSmith (2011-14) enters his first season with the Dallas Stars after five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, followed by the most recent season with the Vancouver Canucks. The Stars play their first game on Thursday versus the Nashville Predators on ESPN+ at 7:00 p.m. DeSmith has played in 163 regular season NHL games with 142 starts. He has made 4,210 saves with a save percentage of .910 and a goal against average of 2.82. Desmith has played in three playoff games, one in the 2021-22 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins and two in the 2023-24 season with the Vancouver Canucks.
Foegele (2014-15) will make his debut for the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday versus the Buffalo Sabres on ESPN+ at 7:00 p.m. This season will be his first with the Kings after playing his first four seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes, followed by three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. During his regular season career, he has 80 goals and 83 assists for 163 points, while playing in a total of 80 playoff games he has scored 12 goals with 12 assists for a total of 24 points. Foegele and the Oilers made it to the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals.
The Wildcats will start the 2024-25 season on Saturday, Oct. 12 versus Bentley at 7 p.m. on Opening Night at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex for a Breast Cancer Awareness Game. The first 750 fans will receive a 2024-25 UNH men's hockey magnet schedule. There will also be a Vintage Jersey Pop Up Store in the lobby where fans can purchase UNH game worn jerseys. This is the only regular season home game in October for the 'Cats.
