Lea Stabaek Wenaas Leads UNH with Third-Place Finish on Day 1 of UVM Carnival

Charles Martell places seventh in UNH debut.
CRAFTSBURY, Vt. – Senior Lea Stabaek Wenaas (Oslo, Norway) placed third in the 1.3K classic and graduate student Charles Martell (Exeter, N.H.) was seventh as the UNH Nordic ski team competed on Day 1 of the Vermont Carnival to start the season. Â

UNH is currently in fourth place overall out of 14 teams with 151 points as the women's team was fourth with 94 points and the men's team was eighth with 57 points. Dartmouth leads the carnival with 235 points, while Vermont is second (198), Middlebury is third (196) and Colby was fifth (145).

Wenaas qualified for the finals and placed third overall with a time of 3:51.18 for 44 points. Senior captain Luci Anderson (Golden Valley, Minn.) finished 14th overall to post 26 points as she was third in her quarterfinal heat at 3:49.39. Senior Georgianna Fischer (Bozeman, Mont.) was 15th as she placed third in her quarterfinal with a time of 3:53.65, while sophomore Emma Charles (Farmington, Maine) was 18th overall and picked up 24 points as she was fourth in her quarterfinal heat at 3:53.47.

On the men's side, Martell reached the semifinals and tallied 35 points with a seventh-place overall finish in his UNH debut. He placed third in the semifinal with a time 3:18.92. Senior captain Seth Wyatt (Bozeman, Mont.) recorded an 18th-place finish as he was fourth in his quarterfinal at 3:18.96, while junior Eli Gore (Madison, Wis.) earned 12 points placing 36th overall with a time of 3:27.08 in the qualifying heat. Junior Roger Anderson (Golden Valley, Minn.) secured 10 points with a 51st place finish with a time of 3:31.22 in the qualifier.

- The Nordic teams will conclude action in the Vermont Carnival on Saturday, Jan. 13, with the 10K skate. The women will start at 11 a.m. and the men at 12:30 p.m. The Alpine events of the Vermont Carnival will take place on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27 at Stowe Mountain.
