Wildcats Roar Past UC Davis, 7-1, Behind Three Goals from Tasmin Cookman

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore forward and captain Tasmin Cookman (Woking, England) scored three goals to lead the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Sunday afternoon's 7-1 victory against UC Davis at Memorial Field.
Cookman scored three goals in a span of 6 minutes, 24 seconds in the second quarter. Senior captain Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherland) was the other Wildcat who factored in more than one goal with a goal and an assist.
Senior Lily Rothwell (Lynnfield, Mass.), sophomore Nicole Poulakis (Ajax, Ontario) and freshman Louette Petiet (Hoofddorp, Netherlands) were UNH's other goal scorers. Freshman Kathelijne Knuttel (Groningen, Netherlands) extended her point streak to four games with two assists.
Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) was not credited with a save and allowed one goal in 40:24 to earn the win. Mariana Birdthistle (Limerick, Ireland) stopped both shots on goal the final 19:36.
UC Davis starting goalie Sarah Lopez made two saves and yielded six goals in the first half. Emma Giesting played the final 30 minutes with one save and one goal against. Lizzy Tedrow scored the Aggies' goal.
UNH improved to 5-2 overall, 4-0 at home and 2-0 in America East while UC Davis is now 1-8, 0-2.

FIRST QUARTER
- Poulakis gave UNH a 1-0 lead at 5:37 when she collected Knuttel's entry pass on the right side and lifted a shot from close range over Lopez into the upper-right corner of the cage.
- The Wildcats extended the advantage to 2-0 at 10:47. Lee corralled the ball gained possession outside UNH's defensive 25 line and, after one touch, sent a long pass into the circle that Rothwell redirected into the cage.
- Tedrow's goal lifted UC Davis within 2-1 at 12:17.
SECOND QUARTER
- Cookman scored goals at 19:13, 20:21 and 25:37 to push the lead to 5-1.
- Knuttel set up the first of those tallies as she entered at the top of the circle and slipped a pass to the middle, were Cookman turned and fired a low shot into the cage.
- UNH's fourth goal was scored on a restart just outside the top-right of the circle. Lee initiated the sequence with a pass to the right side, and the entry pass by Tamera Cookman (Woking, England) was redirected off Tasmin's stick inside the left post.
- On a restart from the right corner, Tamera's long hit was kicked out by Lopez, but Tasmin controlled the rebound on the endline, advanced toward the post and pulled the ball off the line before scoring.
- UNH converted a corner into a goal and 6-1 lead at 28:26. Lee initiated the play with an insert to the top of the circle, where the direct shot by Gigi Fay (Lancaster, Mass.) was blocked by a defender. Lee gathered the ball at the left post, spun and rolled the ball inside the right post.
THIRD QUARTER
- UC Davis recorded a 2-1 shot advantage and generated the only penalty corner in the scoreless third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Petiet capped the game scoring at 50:38 with an unassisted goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNH recorded a 17-7 shot advantage that included 10-3 on goal.
- Penalty corners were even, 2-2.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Tasmin Cookman matched her career high of three goals; she scored three times in a game twice last year as a freshman.
- She has scored multiple goals in 3 of 7 games this season.
- Cookman is UNH's leader in both goals (nine) and points (19).
- Poulakis scored a goal for the second consecutive game. She ranks second on the squad in both goals (five) and points (14).
- It was the first career goal for Petiet; she also has two assists this season.
- Rothwell scored her first goal of the season.
- The seven goals marked a season high for the Wildcats, who have scored three or more goals in 6 of 7 games this season.
