Yeomans Races to a First Place Finish in 5000m Run at UMass Saturday Afternoon

AMHERST, Mass. – Graduate student Nicole Yeomans (Foxboro, Mass.) won the 5000m run in her outdoor 5K debut Saturday afternoon as the University of New Hampshire women's track and field team competed in the UMass Pre-Conference Meet at the UMass Track and Field Complex.

FIELD EVENTS
Three Wildcats set new personal bests in the pole vault with freshman Makena Lee (Northwood, N.H.) leading the way, finishing in second place in the event, reaching a mark of 12' 1.75" (3.70m. Senior Taylor Nydam (Hampton Falls, N.H.) came in sixth place with a height of 11' 1.75" (3.40m). Freshman Calli Ogurkis reached a height of 10' 8" (3.25m), placing ninth in the event.
Junior Mia Taranko (Saco, Maine) placed sixth in the long jump, reaching a distance of 16' 4.5" (4.99m) while sophomore Teagan O'Brien (Pawcatuck, Conn.) finished with a jump of 16' 1" (4.90m) to come in seventh place.
Freshman Kristen Kirk came in a tie for seventh place in the high jump, leaping to a mark of 4' 11" (1.5m).
Freshman Opal Shinnlinger (Canaan, N.H.) had a sixth-place finish in the discus throw as she recorded a toss of 126' 3" (38.48m).
Graduate student Sarah Williams (Dover, N.H.) finished sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 175' 11" (53.63m). Williams also placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 41' 7.25".
Shinnlinger had the best finish for the 'Cats in the shot put, coming in seventh place with a throw of 39' 5.5" (12.03m). Freshman Lindsay Isaacs (Rutland, Mass.) had a throw of 39' 4." (11.99m) to come in eighth place.
Sophomore Olivia Valianti (Mansfield, Mass.) came in second place in the javelin throw, reaching a distance of 129' 2" (39.37m) to achieve her highest finish in an event in her career.
TRACK EVENTS
Junior Natalie Fraser (Gilford, N.H.) finished the 400m dash in third place with a time of 59.05 seconds, achieving her best time of the outdoor season. Sophomore Kaitlin Lennox (Hampton Falls, N.H.) had an eighth-place finish in the event with a time of 1:02.79.
Senior Meline Almasian (Westford, Mass.) finished in sixth place in the 100m dash, crossing the finish line in 12.68 seconds.
Freshman Zoe Catrambone (Cranston, R.I.) set a new personal best in the 800m run with a time of 2:23.12, finishing in 14th place.
After setting a personal best in the pole vault, Ogurkis hit the track where she finished fifth in her debut in the 400m hurdles, finishing the race in 1:07.89.
Sophomore Gwenyth Dahlinger (Pelham, N.H.) notched a seventh-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 27.49 seconds, earning a new personal best. Sophomore Nadege Masumbuko (Manchester, N.H.) also set a new personal best in the event, finishing in 28.22 seconds for an 11th-place finish.
Yeomans won the 5000m run with a time of 17:43.46, competing in the outdoor 5K run for the first time in her five-year career at UNH.
The squad of Almasian, Taranko, Dahlinger, and Fraser came in fourth place in the 4x100m relay race with a time of 50.28 seconds.
NEXT UP
The Wildcats return to action at the UAlbany Track and Field Complex for the America East Outdoor Championships beginning on Saturday, May 6 with the competitions concluding on Sunday, May 7.
