Lyons and Schulz Record Second-Place Finishes in Day 1 at Williams Carnival

HANCOCK, Mass. and WOODFORD, Vt. – Junior Jasmine Lyons (Ottawa, Ontario) and senior Scott Schulz (Lake Placid, N.Y.) both finished second in their respective 10k classic races to highlight the University of New Hampshire ski team's results in Friday's opening day of the Williams Carnival.
After the first day of competition, UNH is in fourth place with 354 points; in the 10k classic, the women's Nordic squad tied for the top team score of 120 points.
The University of Vermont is atop the 14-team standings with 441 points. UVM is followed by Middlebury College (395 points), Dartmouth College (387), UNH and Harvard University (252).

RESULTS
Lyons completed the 10k classic at Prospect Mountain with a time of 36 minutes, 14.2 seconds to place just 1.7 seconds behind the winner. Senior Luci Anderson (Golden Valley, Minn.) finished immediately behind Lyons in third place to earn a spot on the podium with a time of 36:23.2. Sophomore Beth Granstrom (Revelstoke, British Columbia) completed the Wildcats' scoring with an 11th-place finish of 38:23.5.
Two other UNH skiers placed in the top 20 with junior Lea Stabaek Wenaas (Oslo, Norway) in 15th place at 38:38.0 and classmate Georgianna Fischer (Bozeman, Mont.) in 18th at 39:18.1.
Schulz crossed the finish line of the 10k classic course in 30:47.1 to earn second place. Sophomore Nathan Maybach (Boise, Idaho) raced to 15th place in 32:42.9 and classmate Roger Anderson (Golden Valley, Minn.) took 28th place with a time of 33:34.4. The 91 combined points ranked fourth in the men's 10k classic.
Sophomore Zoe Michael (Sydney, Australia) was UNH's top finisher in Friday's alpine competition at Jiminy Peak with a seventh-place effort of 1:39.64 in the slalom. Senior Emma Kearing (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) was the next fastest Wildcat in 1:41.32 for 17th place and grad student Lisa Olsson (Stockholm, Sweden) placed 29th at 1:45.33.
Junior Peder Nersnaes (Oslo, Norway) was the top 'Cat in the men's slalom with a two-run time of 1:31.23 to finish in 10th place. Freshman Isac Hedstrom (Are, Sweden) tied for 20th place in 1:32.20 and was followed immediately by senior Marius Solbakken (Bekkestua, Norway) in 22nd place with a time of 1:32.33.
NEXT UP
- UNH returns to action Feb. 18 for the conclusion of the Williams Carnival. The Nordic teams will compete in the freestyle skate while the alpine races in giant slalom.
