UNH Falls to Maine, 56-45

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team fell to Maine 56-45 in a Border Battle presented by Buffalo Wild Wings on Monday afternoon from Lundholm Gym.
Freshman guard Avery O'Connor (Dedham, Mass.) and junior guard Adara Groman (Hopkinton, Mass.) both scored 12 points in the contest.
The Wildcats' record falls to 7-17 (2-10 AE) and Maine's improves to 13-12 (9-4 AE).

FIRST QUARTER:
· Senior center Brooke Kane (Derry, N.H.) opened scoring for the Wildcats with a hard drive to the basket. She recorded seven points and two rebounds in the first.
· Nine different Wildcats had rebounds in the quarter, contributing to the teams 13 compared to Maine's nine.
· Freshman forward Lucia Melero (Barcelona, Spain) had a late block that secured a 14-12 UNH lead to end the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER:
· Freshman guard Breezie Williams (Canton, Ohio) intercepted a pass on Maine's first procession of the quarter and broke for the other end, sinking a floater from the free throw line.
· O'Connor made six of her 12 points in the second quarter, coming from two three-pointers.
THIRD QUARTER:
· Maine held a 30-24 lead going into the second half, but the Wildcats came out hot, going on an 10-0 run to open the quarter. Of those 10 points, junior guard Groman made eight.
· The Wildcats held the Black Bears from scoring for the first seven minutes during their run.
· Maine then went on a run of their own capped off by back-to-back threes from Olivia Rockwood, taking a 43-39 lead into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER:
· Maine's Rockwood had another set of back-to-back threes at the beginning of the quarter giving the Black Bears a 10-point lead.
· O'Connor had four points to cut the deficit, but Maine responded with five quick points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
· The team shot 100% from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, 75% throughout the game.
· UNH edged Maine in points off fast breaks 7-3.
