UNH Alumnae Howran, Wenczkowski Named to PWHL Team Rosters

TORONTO, Ontario – University of New Hampshire women's hockey Class of 2020 alumnae Tori Howran and Taylor Wenczkowski have both signed contracts to play in the inaugural season of the Professional Women's Hockey League. Final rosters were announced by the six teams Tuesday.
Both Wildcats signed a Standard Player Agreement after being camp invites. Howran is on Ottawa's roster while Wenczkowski will remain in Boston to continue her pro career.
Ottawa opens the season Jan. 2 at home against Montreal and then Boston begins Jan. 3 with a home game vs. Minnesota. Howran and Wenczkowski are scheduled to face off against each other Jan. 8 (6 p.m.) at the Tsongas Center (Lowell, Mass.).
Ottawa returns to Boston on Wednesday, Feb. 21 (7 p.m.) and Saturday, March 16 (TBD). The teams will face off in Ottawa on Wednesday, Jan. 24 and Wednesday, April 24.
Howran played three seasons with Connecticut of the Premier Hockey Federation (formerly NWHL). In three seasons with the Whale, Howran recorded 18 points (two goals, 16 assists) in 47 games. She also tallied one point – a goal – in six postseason games. She was named to the All-Star Game in the2022 season.
Howran was drafted with the seventh overall pick in the 2020 NWHL draft by Connecticut.
Howran appeared in 149 career games for UNH, including all 37 games of her 2019-2020 senior season, when she captained the Wildcats returned to the Hockey East semifinals for the first time in 10 years. Howran tallied the second-most points on the team that season with two goals and a team-leading 20 assists for 22 points. Both her goals were game-winning tallies.
With Howran in the top defensive pairing, the Wildcats ended the 2019-2020 regular season with the 10th-best defense in the NCAA and the eighth-best penalty kill. UNH's penalty kill ended the year at 89%, allowing just 16 power play goals on 145 attempts. Howran blocked 57 shots on the season.
In her four seasons as a UNH Wildcat, Howran tallied seven goals and 48 assists for 55 points, and blocked 167 shots. Off the ice, she also excelled in the classroom being named a three-time Hockey East All-Academic Team member in her career.
Wenczkowski skated in 51 regular-season games in three seasons with the Boston Pride of the Premier Hockey Federation. She recorded 11 goals and 14 assists for a total of 25 points. Wenczkowski had a breakout season in 2022, when she finished with 15 points on eight goals and seven assists.
She went on to score three goals in the 2022 playoffs, including the Isobel Cup-clinching game-winning goal for the second consecutive year, to earn the tournament's Most Valuable Player. In seven career playoff games, she netted five goals and also had an assist for a total of six points.
Wenczkowski had been selected 18th overall in the third round of the 2020 NWHL draft by Boston.
Wenczkowski tallied 82 career points in a UNH uniform, scoring 42 goals and notching 40 assists in 149 career games. Her sophomore season was cut short due to injury, but she responded in the 2017-18 season with a team-high 20 points.
She followed that with a 20-goal season and garnered Hockey East All-Star honors on the Third Team as she led the 'Cats in both goals and points (26). Wenczkowski was a captain alongside Howran as a senior in the 2019-20 season; she ranked second in assists (14) and third in points (21) that year.
The 2023-24 UNH women's hockey team returns to action Sunday, Dec. 31 (2 p.m.) against Dartmouth College. The first 300 fans in attendance at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex will receive a free 2024 UNH women's hockey team calendar.
