UNH Edged 3-1 by Boston U. in Stick it to Stigma Game

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore forward Kira Juodikis (LaSalle, Ontario) scored a goal but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was defeated 3-1 by Boston University at the Whittemore Center on Saturday afternoon.
Junior forward Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) and sophomore defenseman Marina Alvarez (Center Moriches, N.Y.) were credited with an assist on Juodikis' goal, which gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead 3:39 into the game.
Senior goaltender Nicky Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.) was credited with 15 saves and charged with two goals against; the Terriers scored an empty-net goal with 44 seconds remaining.
BU goalie Andrea Brandli stopped 30 shots while both Brooke Disher and Clara Yuhn tallied a goal and an assist.
UNH moves to 9-17-0 overall and 7-12-0 in Hockey East. BU improves to 8-15-2, 7-12-2.
This was UNH's sixth annual Stick it to Stigma game; the event promotes mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The game, co-sponsored by local nonprofit organizations Connor's Climb and The Benny Fund, featured free admission, a silent auction for the game-worn specialty jerseys, photo ops, informational tables and a local youth hockey game at intermission.

FIRST PERIOD
- UNH struck first at 3:39 of the opening period. Alvarez advanced the puck through the defensive zone to Juodikis, who in turn slipped a pass to Brooks on the right wing. Brooks' shot from the right circle was stopped by Brandli, but Juodikis swatted in the rebound from the slot.
- The Wildcats were whistled for penalties at 15:56 and 16:22 to give BU a 5-on-3 power play for 1 minute, 34 seconds.
- Harnett slid from the top of her crease to the right post to deny Disher on a backdoor pass at 17:31.
- With BU still on the two-skater advantage, Disher lifted a shot from the slot over a scrum in the crease to tie the game, 1-1, at 17:46.
- O'Leary scored 26 seconds later as the Terriers quickly transformed a one-goal deficit into a 2-1 lead with a pair of power-play tallies.
SECOND PERIOD
- New Hampshire recorded an 11-3 shot advantage in the scoreless second stanza.
- The Wildcats began the period with 1:22 remaining on a power play, but Brandli stopped all four shots to preserve the visitor's one-goal advantage.
THIRD PERIOD
- UNH went on its third power play of the game at 1:23, but once again Brandli backboned a successful penalty kill – this time with two saves.
- Harnett was pulled in favor of an extra skater with 2:01 remaining but had to reenter on a defensive zone faceoff at 18:59.
- She returned to the bench with 45 seconds to play but Yuhn fired a shot from center ice into the empty net just one second later to give BU a 3-1 lead.
- Harnett once again exited for an extra skater with 18 seconds left, but the Wildcats did not record a shot the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- New Hampshire finished with a 31-18 shot advantage and 37-26 edge in the faceoff circle.
- BU was a perfect 2-for-2 on the power play while the Wildcats were 0-for-3.
- UNH blocked 13 shot attempts while the Terriers recorded 19 blocks.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Juodikis extended her goal streak to three games and point streak to four games. She has four goals and three assists for a total of seven points in that span.
- Brooks pushed her assist and point streaks to four games. She has three goals and five assists for a total of eight points in this stretch.
- Brooks won a season-high 17 faceoffs and was in the circle for 31 of the game's 63 draws.
- Alvarez tallied a point in both games this weekend; she scored a goal in Friday's 5-3 win against 15th-ranked Boston College.
- Grad student defenseman Emily Rickwood (Brantford, Ontario) extended her school record for games played to 155.
- Grad student forward Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) moved to No. 2 with 151 career games played.
- Seniors Annie Berry (Milton, Mass.) and Rae Breton (Brighton, Ontario) led UNH with three blocks apiece.
