Late Rally Falls Short in 7-4 Loss to #13 Providence

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Tamara Thiérus (Saint- Jérôme, Quebec) and junior Chavonne Truter (Uxbridge, Ontario) both recorded a goal and two assists to fuel a late surge by the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team, but the Wildcats were defeated 7-4 by 14th-ranked Providence College at the Whittemore Center on Friday night.
Sophomore Brooke Hammer (Commerce Township, Mich.) also recorded multiple points with a goal and an assist. Graduate student goaltender Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) was credited with 35 saves and charged with six goals against.
PC was led offensively by Sara Hjalmarsson (three goals, two assists) and Noemi Neubauerova (two goals, one assist). Sandra Abstreiter made 16 saves.
UNH moves to 9-18-0 overall and 7-13-0 in Hockey East. Providence improves to 18-8-3, 13-6-3.

FIRST PERIOD
- Providence recorded a 14-4 shot advantage in the first period and took a 1-0 lead at 3:59 on Neubauerova's wraparound at the right post.
- UNH tied the score at 9:32 when Hammer also scored on a wraparound goal at the right post. Thiérus, with the pass from the right corner, and Truter were credited with assists.
SECOND PERIOD
- Providence scored at 9:48 on a goal by Hjalmarsson to go back in front, 2-1.
- The Friars extended their lead to 3-1 on Neubauerova's second goal of the game at 14:53.
THIRD PERIOD
- PC pushed the margin to 4-1 on Megan Quirion's goal at 3:00.
- Hjalmarsson scored again on a Providence power play at 9:44 to take a 5-1 lead.
- The Friars scored again on the power play at 14:43 on a goal by Ida Press to build a 6-1 advantage.
- UNH put an end to the visitor's streak of five consecutive goals by scoring three goals in 78 seconds.
- On a power play, Brooks scored on a sharp-angle shot deep on the left wing to lift UNH within 6-2 at 17:08. Kyla Bent (Halifax, Nova Scotia) initiated the sequence with a pass through the neutral zone to Brooks, who then corralled the return pass from Emily Pinto (Mulmur, Ontario).
- Twenty-one seconds later, Truter scored her second goal of the season on a wrist shot from the left circle into the upper-right corner to trim the deficit to 6-3. Thiérus gained possession on the left half-boards and cycled the puck into the left corner, where Hammer's backhand pass found Truter.
- Thiérus scored off the rebound from Truter's initial shot to narrow the margin to 6-4 at 18:26. Truter set up the tally by stealing the puck at the offensive blue line and advancing down the slot.
- With 48 seconds left in the period, Boutilier exited the ice to give the Wildcats an extra attacker.
- PC's Hjalmarsson completed her hat trick by scoring into the empty net with five seconds remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Providence recorded a 42-20 shot advantage.
- New Hampshire finished with a 14-3 block shot advantage and 25-19 edge in the faceoff circle.
- PC was 2-for-5 on the power play while the Wildcats were 1-for-4.

- Brooks pushed her point streak to five games. She has four goals and five assists for a total of nine points in this stretch.
- Brooks led all skaters with 13 faceoff wins and Gabby Jones (Westfield, Mass.) excelled in the circle by winning 6 of 7 faceoffs.
- Thiérus matched her career highs of two assists and three points; she now has two assists in a game five times as well as four three-point efforts.
- Truter tallied multiple assists in a game for the first time in her career and also established a personal best with those three points.
- Hammer matched her career high of two points with her first goal and first assist of the season.
- Grad student defenseman Emily Rickwood (Brantford, Ontario) extended her school record for games played to 156.
- Grad student forward Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) is No. 2 with 152 career games played.
