Verrier's Two Goals Leads UNH Past Union, 5-2

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore forward Shea Verrier (Reading, Mass.) scored two goals to lead the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team to Saturday afternoon's 5-2 victory against Union College at the Whittemore Center.
Senior forward Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) and junior forward Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) also recorded multiple points. Thiérus finished with a goal and an assist while Brooks tallied two assists.
Grad student defenseman Emily Rickwood (Brantford, Ontario) and junior forward Chavonne Truter (Uxbridge, Ontario) netted UNH's other goals. Senior goaltender Nicky Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.) made 15 of her 25 saves in the third period.
Union goalie Sophie Matsoukas stopped 14 shots. Riley Walsh and Paige Greco scored the goals.
Both teams move to 1-1-0 on the season.

FIRST PERIOD
- UNH roared out to a 4-1 lead in the opening 20 minutes.
- Rickwood carried the puck from the defensive zone into the attack zone and wristed a shot from the slot inside the left post to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead 62 seconds into the game. Junior captain Charli Kettyle (Perth, Ontario) and grad student Emily Pinto (Mulmur, Ontario) were credited with assists.
- Verrier scored 67 seconds later to give UNH an early 2-0 lead at 2:09. Brooks won possession in the right corner and Thiérus sent the puck around the boards. Verrier skated onto the puck at the left point, advanced to the slot and rang a shot off the left post into the cage.
- UNH scored goals 22 seconds apart to quickly extend a two-goal advantage to 4-0.
- Thiérus, who moved from behind the goal line to the left faceoff dot, gave the 'Cats a 3-0 lead at 15:04 when her rising shot beat Matsoukas glove side. Sophomore Marina Alvarez (Center Moriches, N.Y.) made the initial pass around the boards to Brooks, who sent the puck back along the left dashers to Thiérus to set up the goal.
- Truter snapped a shot from the left circle to give UNH a 4-0 lead at 15:26. In the defensive zone, freshman Kelly Harty (Billerica, Mass.) chipped the puck from the boards to Truter to initiate the breakout. Truter slipped a pass to classmate Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario), received the return pass on the left wing and went on to score the fourth goal of the game.
- Union trimmed the deficit to 4-1 on Walsh's goal at 17:27.
SECOND PERIOD
- Union scored the only goal of the middle stanza when Greco dove on the ice in the slot and redirected the puck back toward the left post into the cage to lift the Dutchwomen within 4-2 at 4:10.
THIRD PERIOD
- Union recorded a 15-2 shot advantage in the final frame but could not reduce the two-goal margin.
- The Dutchwomen pulled Matsoukas with 2:39 remaining. On the ensuing faceoff, the puck was cleared out of UNH's defensive end into the neutral zone. Verrier skated onto the loose puck on the left wing a deposited a shot into the open net to push the lead to 5-2 at 17:29.
- Matsoukas returned in net briefly and went back to the bench for an extra skater with 2:04 to play.
- Harnett made two more saves – both on shots by Walsh – the rest of the way to secure the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Union finished with a 27-19 shot advantage.
- UNH's penalty kill was a perfect 3-for-3 and the Wildcats' power play was 0-for-2.
- New Hampshire blocked 12 shot attempts; the Dutchwomen blocked five shots.
- Union had a 32-27 edge in the faceoff circle.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- It was the first career multiple-goal game for Verrier. The two points match her personal best established Feb. 12, 2022 at Holy Cross.
- Brooks matched her personal bests in both assists and points with the two assists.
- Thiérus now has 10 career multiple-point games, which is best among active Wildcats.
- Harty recorded her first career point with the first-period assist.
- Pinto recorded an assist in both games of the weekend series vs. Union.
- Brooks and Pinto are the only 'Cats who tallied a point both games.
- Harnett's 15 third-period saves was one less than her single-period high of 16 established Dec. 11, 2022 vs. Maine.
- Junior Brianna Legros (New Liskeard, Ontario) recorded a team-high three blocked shots.
- Rickwood, Alvarez and grad student Gabby Jones (Westfield, Mass.) each blocked two shots.
- It was Rickwood's first goal since Dec. 20, 2020 at Vermont; she has seven career goals.
- Brooks was the top 'Cat in the faceoff circle with a .529 win percentage (9 of 17).
- A total of 10 Wildcats recorded a point Saturday.
- The previous time UNH scored four (or more) goals in a period was Dec. 23, 2022 against Holy Cross, when the 'Cats had four tallies in the second stanza.

- UNH has a 6-1-0 lifetime record against Union following this weekend's two-game split at the Whitt.
