Torres Scores 16 Points in 49-44 AE Quarterfinal Loss to UAlbany

ALBANY, N.Y. – Grad student and captain Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) scored a game-high 16 points, but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team was defeated 49-44 by the University at Albany in Saturday afternoon's America East quarterfinal game at SEFCU Arena.
In addition to the 16 points, Torres recorded three steals, two assists and a rebound in her final game as a Wildcat. Senior Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.), also in her last game as a 'Cat, finished with nine points and game-high eight rebounds.
UAlbany was led by Kayla Cooper (14 points, five rebounds) and Freja Werth (12 points).
UNH, which entered the tourney as the No. 7 seed, ends the season at 7-21. Second-seeded UAlbany advances to the semifinals with a 21-9 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- A 3-pointer by junior Brooke Kane (Derry, N.H.) from the left wing gave UNH its first lead of the game, 3-2, at 7:38 of the first quarter, and then her layup put the Wildcats back in front, 5-4, at 6:34.
- Sophomore Bella Stuart (Clifton Park, N.Y.) made a driving layup to tie the score, 7-7, at 3:44.
- UAlbany responded with a 3-pointer to regain the lead, 10-7, at 3:15 and the Great Danes led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter.
- Gogolin opened the second quarter with a jumper to lift UNH within 12-11.
- The Great Danes went on a 5-1 run to build at 17-12 lead at 4:32.
- Torres' layup and a pull-up jumper by Stuart in the lane closed the deficit to 17-16 at 2:36.
- The Wildcats trailed 22-16 in the final minute of the first half, but a layup by Torres and pair of three throws by Gogolin lifted the 'Cats within 22-20 at halftime.
- Baskets by Stuart and Torres tied the game at 22 and 24, respectively, and then Torres' driving layup to beat the shot clock gave UNH a 26-24 lead at 5:18.
- Gogolin's putback extended the advantage to 28-24 at 5:10, and Torres made two free throws to push UNH's run to 8-0 and lead to 30-24 at 4:31.
- With the score tied at 31, Gogolin's basket gave the Wildcats a two-point advantage through three quarters.
- UAlbany opened the fourth quarter with consecutive baskets to regain the lead, 35-33.
- With UNH trailing 37-34, Torres hit a layup and two foul shots to give the Wildcats a 38-37 lead at 5:32.
- Sophomore Adara Groman (Hopkinton, Mass.) made a 3-pointer from the left wing to put the 'Cats in front, 43-42, at 3:05.
- The Great Danes went on a 5-0 spurt in the next minute to go back in front, 47-43, and the home team remained in front the rest of the way.
- After inching within 47-44, the 'Cats had a strong defensive effort to force a turnover in the waning seconds of a UAlbany possession with 36.5 seconds remaining.
- UNH missed a game-tying 3-pointer with 26 seconds to play.
- A series of New Hampshire fouls sent UAlbany to the foul line, where Helene Haegerstrand hit one free throw to advance the score to 48-44 with 13.6 seconds on the clock.
- The Wildcats were whistled for travelling with five seconds remaining and UAlbany added one foul shot with 4.3 seconds left to close the scoring.

- There were seven ties and 10 lead changes in the game, including five lead changes and three tie scores in the fourth quarter.

- Junior Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) finished with four points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists, as well as one steal.
- Torres drew eight UAlbany fouls resulting from her drives to the hoop.
- New Hampshire has a 19-29 lifetime record vs. UAlbany. The Great Danes have won six straight meetings.
- UNH has a 13-38 lifetime record in 38 conference tournament appearances.
