Meisen claims First Team in giant slalom; Lyons registers Second Team in 10K classic
MIDWAY & PARK CITY, Utah – UNH graduate student alpine skier Bastian Meisen (Munich, Germany) and sophomore Nordic skier Jasmine Lyons (Ottawa, Ontario) earned All-American honors Thursday for the Wildcats on the opening day of racing at the 2022 NCAA Ski Championships, hosted by the University of Utah.
With 97.0 points, UNH is in 10th place overall. Host Utah is atop the leaderboard with 286.5 points, followed by Colorado (262.0), Denver (249.0), Vermont (235.0) and Middlebury (131.5) to round out the Top 5.
"We are excited to be only 34.5 points out of fifth place," UNH ski coordinator/Nordic head coach Cory Schwartz said. "Congratulations to Jasmine and Bastian for their All-American races. Now we are looking forward to a solid day in slalom tomorrow and finishing strong on the distance skate day Saturday. We have many athletes who can score big points in those two days."
Meisen raced to fifth place and All-American First Team status in the men's giant slalom at Park City Mountain Resort with a two-run time of 1 minute, 58.40 seconds (29 points). He bested sixth-place finisher Joachim Lien of Utah by 0.21 seconds for the final First-Team berth; Lien was fourth and Meisen eighth prior to the second run.
At Soldier Hollow, Lyons completed the women's 5K classic in 14 minutes, 12.6 seconds for eighth place (23 points) and All-American Second Team recognition. Freshman Lisa Nystedt (Stockholm, Sweden) finished in 25th place for (14:48.4) for six points, and junior Luci Anderson (Golden Valley, Minn.) placed 33rd (15:30.3).
The UNH's men's alpine team was the top GS finisher among EISA schools and finished fifth overall with 47 points. Host Utah won the race with 75 points, followed by Denver (63), Colorado (59) and Westminster (55). Wildcat graduate student Will Bruneau-Bouchard (Quebec City, Quebec) finished in 20th place (2:00.08, 10 points), and junior Marius Solbakken (Bekkestua, Norway) finished 24th (2:00.24, 8 points).
Senior Fanny Sanderberg (Oslo, Norway) paced the Wildcat women's alpine efforts by clocking in at 2:07.29 (eight points), and freshman Zoe Michael (Sydney, Australia) finished in 28th (2:09.46, three points).
In the men's 10K classic at Soldier Hollow, freshman Roger Anderson (Golden Valley, Minn.) led the Wildcats with a 22nd-place finish (25 minutes, 50.4 seconds), followed by junior Scott Schulz (Lake Placid, N.Y.), who took 30th (26:33.6, one point). Sophomore Seth Wyatt (Bozeman, Mont.) crossed the line in 28:05.0 (39th).
