ROXBURY, Mass. -- Senior jumper Kevin McGrath (Hopkinton, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire men's track and field team set a new school record and won the high jump with a mark of 6'9.75 on the final day of competition of the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on Saturday.
McGrath, who broke Pat Casey's school record of 6'9 on Saturday, helped the Wildcats to a fifth place finish at New Englands, while junior mid-distance runner Kenney McElroy (West Linn, Ore.) had a very solid showing with a fourth-place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.63.
Junior thrower Andrew Fleming (Acton, Mass.) added a seventh place finish in the shot put with a mark of 48'1.75.
"We ended up with a fifth place finish, needless to say Kevin McGrath winning the high jump and the new school record was the highlight of the day," said UNH head coach Robert Hoppler. "He had a really severe knee injury his freshman year and come back in his senior year after all of that and through the pandemic is a fantastic accomplishment, I am very I impressed and proud."
UNH's 4x800 replay team placed second with a mark of 7:51 comprised of Dillon Adamy (Clinton, N.J.), Colin Conery (Concord, N.H.), Zach Plaza (Derry, N.H.) and Kevin Finn (Kennebunk, Maine).
"The 4x800 today finished second and ran very well, a nice combination of upperclassmen and freshmen," stated Hoppler. "McElroy ran fourth in the 800 as well, so our 800 runners had very good day. Overall, I really feel like we are coming together as a team and progressing as we get ready for the championship part of season."
UNH also posted a ninth place finish in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:25.18 made up of Brian Genet (Merrimack, N.H.), Adrian Sutton (Rochester, N.H.), Jack Kennefick (Walpole, Mass.) and Michael Monahan (Tewksbury, Mass.).
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, February 11 for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University.
