Boutilier Breaks Program Career Saves Record in 2-1 Loss to #4 Northeastern

Senior Captain Surpasses Previous Benchmark of 2,851 Saves Held by All-American Jen Huggon
DURHAM, N.H. – Senior goaltender Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) made 25 saves and broke the University of New Hampshire women's hockey program record for career saves in Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to fourth-ranked Northeastern University at the Whittemore Center.
Boutilier increased her career saves total to 2,862, which surpasses the previous benchmark of 2,851 held by All-American Jen Huggon (2000-03). Boutilier became the record holder with her 15th save of Tuesday night, which came at 12:47 of the second period.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead on a first-period goal by sophomore defenseman Charli Kettyle (Perth, Ontario).
Maddie Mills and Skylar Fontaine scored the Northeastern goals in the second and third periods, respectively, and Aerin Frankel made 23 saves, including 13 in the first period.
UNH moves to 11-18-2 overall and 9-14-1 in Hockey East. NU extended its winning streak to five games to improve to 26-4-1, 20-3-1.

FIRST PERIOD
- UNH scored the only goal of the period with a 14-8 shot advantage.
- At 11:11, a wrister from the top of the right circle off the stick of senior captain Maddie Truax (Gardner, Mass.) was redirected on goal by freshman Kira Juodikis (LaSalle, Ontario) off Frankel's right leg pad. The rebound went across the crease toward sophomore Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario), but she couldn't get a stick on the puck.
- At 13:34, Andrea Renner advanced behind the defense through the right circle. Boutilier stopped the initial rising backhander and the rebound attempt to keep the game scoreless.
- Kettyle struck at 14:31 to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) won the puck behind the cage and skated out to the left doorstep, where she was denied twice by Frankel. Kettyle skated down the slot to the loose puck and lifted a shot into the upper-left corner.
- With three minutes left in the period, Mills led a 2-on-1 rush into the left circle. Her centering pass sent Maureen Murphy down the slot but Boutilier stoned her on the close-range shot.
SECOND PERIOD
- NU recorded a 10-4 shot advantage and scored the lone goal in the second stanza
- At 7:17, junior Jada Christian (Caledon East, Ontario) lifted a shot from the left circle over Frankel that caromed off the right post.
- Boutilier steered aside Katy Knoll's shot from the right circle for her record-breaking 2,852nd career save at 12:47, and that stop kept UNH in front 1-0.
- Boutilier denied Skylar Irving's shot from the right doorstep at 13:54.
- Juodikis gained possession in the neutral zone to spring Brooks and Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario) on a 2-on-1 rush with 2:30 on the clock. Kelly corralled Brooks' return pass in the slot and pulled the puck to her backhand at the left post and lifted a shot over the crossbar.
- Murphy's shot from the high slot redirected off Mills' skates in front and went into the cage to tie the score, 1-1, with 52.9 seconds remaining in the second period.
THIRD PERIOD
- Northeastern scored the only goal in the final frame with a 9-6 edge in shots.
- Fontaine's slap shot through traffic from the high slot gave NU a 2-1 lead at 6:23.
- Midway through the period, Thiérus entered the zone at the high slot and blasted a shot that beat Frankel's glove but ricocheted off the right post.
- On a Huskies rush with 1:11 on the clock, Knoll received a return pass at the right doorstep but Boutilier slid across the crease to keep the 'Cats within 2-1.
- Boutilier skated to the bench for the final 33 seconds. Frankel denied senior captain Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) with 16 seconds to play and NU did not allow a shot on goal the rest of the way to preserve the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- NU finished with a 27-24 shot advantage.
- The Huskies were 0-for-4 on the power play. New Hampshire was scoreless on three power play chances. All seven power plays were in the first two periods.
- UNH had a 24-10 edge in the faceoff circle.
- The Wildcats blocked 19 shots attempts; NU had nine blocks.

- Kettyle scored her second goal of the season.
- Thiérus is now tied for the team lead in assists (12) and points (20).
- Brooks led UNH's dominant effort in the circle by winning 12 of 16 faceoffs (75.0%).
- Martin won 6 of 7 (85.7%) and junior Annie Berry (Milton, Mass.) won 6 of 9 (66.7%).
- Senior defenseman Emily Rickwood (Brantford, Ontario) recorded a game-high five blocks.
