This was the first time in program history that UNH had multiple players selected in the draft.
ST. LOUIS – The University of New Hampshire men's soccer program had a historic night with three players being selected in the 2023 Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Wednesday. This is the first time that the Wildcats have had multiple players selected in the draft.
Junior back Moise Bombito (Montreal, Quebec) was drafted in the first round by the Colorado Rapids as the third overall pick. He is the first player in program history to be picked in the first round.
Senior goalkeeper Jassem Koleilat (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) was selected by 2022 MLS Cup champion Los Angeles FC in the second round with the 58th overall pick.
Senior midfielder Rory O'Driscoll (Minneapolis, Minn.) was drafted by Nashville SC in the third round with the 78th overall selection.
"This is a historic day for our program and we couldn't be more proud of Moise, Jassem and Rory," said UNH head coach Marc Hubbard. "All three are great players but most importantly better people. They have all left their jerseys in a better place than when they arrived. We must not forget that these opportunities would not be available if it were not for the collective effort and success of our team. We wish them all the best as they represent New Hampshire on the professional stage. Finally this day cements New Hampshire men's soccer as a program that can help develop student athletes and provide the proper platform for players to achieve their professional dreams."
The Wildcats have now had six players selected in the MLS SuperDraft. Tola Showunmi was drafted by Atlanta United FC in the third round as the 88th overall pick in 2022, while Josh Bauer was selected by Atlanta in the second round as the 31st overall pick in 2021 and Chris Wingate was picked by New York City FC in the third round as the 54th overall pick in 2017.
Bombito was the first Wildcat to be named a member of the MLS Generation adidas class which is a joint program between MLS and adidas that sees a handful of top collegiate underclassmen and youth national team players signed by MLS to Generation adidas contracts and made available in the SuperDraft.
He had an outstanding season for the Wildcats as he was named a second team All-American and was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, while he recently attended the MLS College Showcase. He won the 2022 America East and ECAC Defender of the Year Awards and earned first team All-America East and ECAC accolades. He tied for third on the team with four goals and tied for second with two game winners. Bombito led a defense that was third in the nation with a 0.500 team goals against average.
"The Colorado Rapids are getting one of the most athletic players that I've had in the program," said Hubbard. "You mix that with his technical ability, character, bravery and desire to win and it will not be long before he finds his way onto the field. The best part of the Moise story is that he has not been playing center back his entire career so I believe there is a lot more growth in his understanding of the game so it is actually kind of scary how good he can potentially be. We are so proud of him and cannot wait to follow and continue to support him on his journey into professional soccer."
Koleilat was stellar in net this season as he was third in the nation with 11 shutouts and was fifth with a 0.599 goals against average. He earned All-Northeast Region First Team accolades, while he was selected to the All-America East Second Team. Over two seasons, he recorded an outstanding 32-6-3 (.817) record and posted 19 shutouts.
"We are so proud that Jassem has earned this opportunity," said Hubbard. "We have known from day one how special he is; he was really unfortunate not to be selected to the MLS combine. He most importantly is a really good person and teammate and I'm proud to see all of his sacrifice come to fruition. We wish him all the best in his pursuit of his first professional contract."
O'Driscoll totaled 19 goals and seven assists for 45 points over 63 career games. This season he tallied six goals and two assists for 14 points. O'Driscoll was named the America East Midfielder of the Year in the 2020 season. He also earned All-America East First Team accolades for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, while he received All-Northeast Regional First Team honors also in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
"Rory has grown so much in our program over the past five years and we are very proud of this achievement," said Hubbard. "It is extra special that he'll be reunited with Josh Bauer again down in Nashville. Rory is not only technical and versatile but plays with such flair that I know he will find his place at the next level."
UNH went 15-4-1 (.775) overall in the 2022 season and was ranked No. 21 in the final United Soccer Coaches National Poll. The Wildcats were 6-1-0 in America East earning the regular season championship for the fourth straight season and their fifth regular season championship in program history. UNH then won its fourth America East Tournament championship and made its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance and sixth straight. The Wildcats defeated Seton Hall, 2-1, in the first round at Wildcat Stadium and then tied No. 10 seed Florida International, 2-2, in the second round but lost the 12 round-shootout 10-9.
The Wildcats posted 11 shutouts and outscored the opposition, 38-12. UNH's .590 team goals against average was ranked third in the nation and its .550 shutout percentage was sixth.
