Bent, Verrier Score Goals in 3-2 Loss at Maine

ORONO, Maine – Grad student and captain Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) made 32 saves but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was defeated 3-2 by the University of Maine at Alfond Arena in Friday night's Border Battle, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings.
Boutilier made 19 of her 32 stops in the second period; her goals against in the third period were on a breakaway and then a Maine power play. Junior defenseman Kyla Bent (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and sophomore forward Shea Verrier (Reading, Mass.) scored UNH's goals.
Maine goalie Jorden Mattision was credited with 16 saves. Luisa Welcke was the game's only multiple-point scorer with two assists. Grace Heiting, Alyssa Wruble and Ida Kuoppala scored the Black Bears' goals.
UNH is now 1-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Hockey East. Maine moves to 2-2-0, 1-0-0.

FIRST PERIOD
- Maine netted an early 1-0 lead when Heiting scored 65 seconds into the game.
- The Black Bears went on the first power play of the game at 8:33, but Boutilier backboned a successful Wildcats' penalty kill with four saves.
- UNH generated its best scoring chance in the waning seconds of the penalty kill when grad student Gabby Jones (Westfield, Mass.) had a breakaway down the left wing. She shifted to the slot and, from the hash marks, wristed a low shot that was blocked aside by Mattison.
- Maine finished with a 10-5 shot advantage in the opening 20 minutes.
SECOND PERIOD
- The Black Bears carried play in the second stanza with a 19-7 shot advantage, but UNH netted the only goal to draw even.
- The Wildcats went on their first power play at 6:23 and leveled the score, 1-1, with a goal at 6:41. The initial shot deep on the left side by sophomore Kira Juodikis (LaSalle, Ontario) was stopped by Mattison, but grad student Emily Pinto (Mulmur, Ontario) pushed the puck across the crease. Bent, positioned at the right doorstep, pulled the puck from behind the and deposited a shot into the open near side of the net.
- Maine began a power play at 11:03 and fired five shots on Boutilier before the home team was whistled for interference at 12:09 to end the skater advantage.
- The Black Bears returned to the power play at 18:21, but this time UNH's penalty kill allowed just one shot on goal.
THIRD PERIOD
- The teams combined for three goals on 12 shots in the third period.
- The Black Bears regained the lead, 2-1, on Wruble's unassisted breakaway goal at 5:51.
- UNH netted another power-play goal at 10:08 to forge a 2-2 tie. Senior captain Annie Berry (Milton, Mass.) battled for the puck on the end boards, sophomore Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) gained possession and her shot from the right faceoff circle dot was blocked. Verrier controlled the rebound in the slot, however, and wristed a shot into the upper-left corner for the goal.
- Maine went back in front, 3-2, on Kuoppala's power-play tally at 12:29.
- New Hampshire called time out with 1:30 remaining and pulled Boutilier in favor of an extra skater.
- With six seconds remaining, sophomore Marina Alvarez (Center Morches, N.Y.) backhanded a shot from the slot through traffic, but Mattison made the save to preserve the lead. Junior Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario) attempted to jam the puck in at the left post but was denied. Maine then cleared the puck around the corner boards to secure the victory.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Maine finished with a 35-18 shot advantage and 29-23 edge in the faceoff circle.
- UNH was 2-for-3 on the power play and the Black Bears went 1-for-4.
- Maine blocked five shot attempts and the Wildcats were credited with four blocks.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Verrier leads UNH in goals with three.
- Bent ranks second with her two goals, both of which have been scored on the power play.
- Jones recorded a team-high nine faceoff wins (on 18 draws).
- Brooks now has a team-high four assists and her four points are also a team best.
- Boutilier has recorded 30+ saves all three games this season.
- UNH scored two power-play goals in a game for the second time this season; the previous time was also a 3-2 loss (to Union College in Game 1).
