Elizabeth Martell Advances to Quarterfinals at NCAA Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Elizabeth Martell (Essex Junction, Vt.) of the University of New Hampshire women's track and field team placed 10th in the 800 meters as she broke her own school record at the 2021 NCAA Track and Field Preliminary Round at the University of North Florida on Thursday.
Martell advances to the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 29 at 7:35 p.m. The top 12 out of 24 will qualify for the NCAA Championship from June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Martell, who made her NCAA Prelims debut, placed 10th out of 48 athletes with a school-record time of 2:04.31 in the 800 meters. She placed third in her heat earning the automatic qualifier. Martell broke her own school record of 2:05.59 that she set when she won the silver medal at the IC4A/ECAC Championship on May 15. Martell also earned a bronze in the 800m at the America East Championship on May 2 with a time of 2:07.96.

Also on Saturday, graduate student Alyssa Colbert (Smithfield, R.I.) will compete in the discus throw at 1:30 p.m. The top 12 will advance to the NCAA Championship. Colbert set the school record in the discus throw four times this season and five times total for her career. She won gold at the America East Championships on May 2 with her best throw of the season at 169' 2" which qualified her for the NCAA Prelims. She also took gold at the New England Championships with a throw of 157' 8" on May 15. This will be her first time competing at the NCAA Prelims.
