EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore Ruth White (Orono, Maine) of the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team finished in 22nd place in the 10,000 meter run at the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday night at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
White crossed the finish line in 33 minutes, 11.62 seconds, which was within three seconds of her season best time established two weeks ago at the NCAA East First Round meet.
"I am so proud of Ruth making her second trip in a row to compete at NCAA nationals," said Anna Magle-Haberek, the director of the women's and men's track & field and cross country programs. "She had tremendous success this season."
Through the first 250 meters of the race, White was in the back of the pack of 24 runners but then quickly surged toward the front and recorded the fifth-fastest opening 400m split of 1:24.48. Through three laps, White was on the heels of the two favorites, Jane Hedengren (Brigham Young University) and Pamela Kosgei (University of New Mexico), in 4:13.80. She held steady in fourth place through the first mile at 5:28.73 as the pace picked up to a 400m split of 74.93 seconds.
White crossed the line through seven laps in fifth place and then was in 11th place through two miles (eight laps) in 10:32.83. Ruth was in 18th place through 4,000m and 19th at the midway point of the race.
White was in 20th place through four miles (6,400m) in a time of 21:00.58 for an average mile pace of 5:15. Through five miles (8,000m), White was 21st across the line in 26:32:13.
Mercyline Kirwa (Iowa State University) won the race in 31:54.88 and was followed by Kosgei in 31:56.49 and Hedengren in 31:57.94.
White advanced to the NCAA final by placing ninth at the NCAA East First Round on May 28 with a season-best time of 33 minutes, 8.83 seconds.
White raced to All-America Second Team in the 10,000m last year as a freshman by finishing in ninth place at the NCAAs with a school-record time of 32:50.17.
White is the first UNH Wildcat to advance to consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships since two-time Olympian and UNH Athletics Hall of Famer Elle Purrier in the 2015-18 seasons.
