Ruth White Breaks Own 5,000m Record at Friar Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Ruth White (Orono, Maine) broke the University of New Hampshire women's track & field record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16 minutes, 3.28 seconds to highlight UNH's results at the Friar Invitational, which was held Friday at Providence College's Ray Treacy Track at Hendricken Field.
White finished in fourth place in the 5,000m with her school-record time that shattered her previous benchmark of 16:22.78 by 19.5 seconds. In the first few laps, she was in sixth place in a pack of nine runners. She moved up to fifth place in a line of six runners through 1,800m, then advanced up to third place, second place and first place each of the next three splits. White was in third place through lap 10, held that position for the next 1,000m and was fourth across the finish line.

Grad student Claire Ronan (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) placed eighth in the mile invitational race with a time of 4:51.90, which was only 0.27 seconds slower than her personal best. She was in the middle of the pack in seventh place after the first 400m with a split of 1:10.56. There were 13 runners in Ronan's heat and a total of 24 overall.
Junior Ella Malone (Barrington, N.H.) raced to a runner-up finish in the open mile run with a time of 5:06.26. Malone and freshman Juliana Sciortino (Niskayuna, N.Y.) were 3-4 in the pack of Heat 4 after the completion of both the first and second laps. Malone advanced to the front of the pack and finished with her fastest lap of 1:14.0 in the last quarter-mile.
Sciortino finished fifth in Heat 4 and seventh overall with a time of 5:08.48. She also finished strong with the last lap as her fastest with a split of 1:15.4.
Bailey Hall (Yardley, Pa.) finished third in the 5,000m open run with a time of 17:41.48. She was in third place at the end of Lap 1 (600m) and ran her fastest split of 1:20.31 in Lap 7. Hall ran her second-fastest split of 1:20.95 in the final 400m (Lap 12) to hold on to third place.
The UNH women's track & field team returns to action April 11 at the Ed Daniels Classic (at SNHU).
The next home meet is the Wildcat Invitational on April 24-25.
