'Cats Edged 1-0 in Overtime at UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) recorded seven saves at Cushing Field Complex in the University of New Hampshire field hockey team's 1-0 overtime loss against UMass Lowell on Friday afternoon.
Junior Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) put two shots on goal and freshman Rosalie Post (The Hague, Netherlands) added one, but neither could find the back of the cage against UML goalkeeper Eleonore Boekhorst, who recorded three saves for the shutout victory.
UML won the game on a Mirthe Gans goal, her second of the season, 4:20 into the extra session.
UNH is now 4-6 overall and 1-5 in America East competition, and the Wildcats return to action April 11 (1 p.m.) for Senior Day against Monmouth University at home. UML is now 6-4, 4-3.
First Quarter

First Quarter
- A scoreless quarter saw UMass Lowell put two shots on goal while UNH did not record a shot.
- UML's Kate Miller took both shots -- one at 7:36 10 yards out from the left post and another at 14:33 from close range – but both were saved by Woods.
Second Quarter
- There was just one shot total in another scoreless quarter.
- In the 19th minute, senior captain Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) went coast-to-coast with the ball on her stick, but is was tapped away in the middle of the circle and rolled harmlessly over the end line.
- Moments later, Woods made a sliding save on a 1-on-1 shot from Miller, who had escaped behind the UNH defense, for her third save of the game.
Third Quarter
- New Hampshire recorded a 7-2 shot advantage – 2-1 on goal -- with a 3-1 edge in penalty corners in the scoreless third quarter.
- Woods saved a shot from Clara Defourt off the first corner of the game for UML and kicked the ball away from the crowd of players around the goal.
- Caron collected an entry pass in front of the cage at 32:20 and took UNH's first shot of the game that missed wide right of the cage.
- Woods made a sliding tackle to deny a shot attempt by Miller, but Gans corralled the ball and shot through traffic wide right at 33:45.
- Sophomore Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) missed a shot wide and then Caron recorded UNH's first shot on goal with a reverse-stick from deep on the left side at 37:01.
- The Wildcats' first penalty corner was inserted by freshman Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherlands) and led to Post's shot to the left corner of the goal that was saved by Boekhorst at the goal line.
- Another UNH corner set up van den Brekel for a shot on the right wing that was blocked by a UML defender in front of Boekhorst.
- Lee inserted a third corner for UNH in the quarter and it led to a redirection shot by Lee, who snuck behind the defense at the left post, that soared over the cage.
Fourth Quarter
- UML took six shots in the quarter with three on goal; UNH did not attempt a shot in the quarter.
- UML led this quarter in corners. 1-0
- Defourt took a quick shot to start the quarter that was stopped by Woods. It produced penalty corner, however, and a shot from Berbel Rozema that missed wide left.
- UML got two more quick shots off, one from Berger that missed wide and another from Miller, her fourth of the game, that was saved by a sliding Woods in the 51st minute.
- UML's Hannah Keefe got close to the goal and took a hard shot that was saved by Woods.
- Defourt had an open look one-on-one against Woods that missed just wide of the cage at 54:56.
Overtime
- UML had a penalty corner opportunity in the 63rd minute that was stopped without a shot by the UNH defense.
- UNH then quickly advanced the ball downfield from Post to van den Brekel to Jaiden Wittel (Stroudsburg, Pa.) to Caron for a breakaway opportunity. Caron's shot was saved by Boekhorst, who charged off her line.
- One minute later, a UNH turnover near midfield led to the game-winning goal. Rozema gained possession and advanced down the left wing, then along the end line. Woods made a headfirst dive to pokecheck the ball, but it went off her facemask to the middle of the circle, where Gans chipped a shot into the open cage to end the game at 64:20.

- UML led in shots 12-8 with 8-3 on goal.
- Penalty corners were tied, 3-3.
UNH Notebook
- Woods now has 56 saves on the season with an .812 save percentage and 1.54 GAA.
- New Hampshire's previous overtime game was also against UMass Lowell – a 3-2 shootout loss at home on Oct. 18, 2019.
Series Notebook
- UNH is now 7-5 all time against UMass Lowell, including 2-3 on the road.
- UML has won the last four matchups between the teams.
- In the last 10 meetings, the series is even 5-5. Nine of those games have been decided by one goal.
