UNH Falls on Senior Day, 5-1 to Monmouth

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Emily Eckels (Arnold, Md.) scored a goal in the University of New Hampshire field hockey team's 5-1 loss to Monmouth University at Memorial Field on Sunday afternoon.
Eckels, in her first career start, scored her second goal of the season to lift UNH within 3-1 in the third quarter.
Sophomore Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) recorded six saves and allowed five goals before exiting the game with 5:04 remaining. Redshirt freshman Nikki Tredwell (Hampton, N.H.) did not face a shot on goal the rest of the way.
Monmouth was led offensively by Ireen Frenken (four goals) and Aylin Aufenacker (one goal, two assists). Starting goalie Kate O'Hogan was not credited with a save and allowed one goal in 48:36. Ally Tarantino made one save in a 11:24 relief appearance.
UNH is 4-7 overall and 1-6 in America East, and is scheduled to return to action April 17 for the regular-season finale vs. Cal (neutral-site game at the University of Vermont). Monmouth won its fifth consecutive game to improve to 8-2, 6-1.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

FIRST QUARTER
- Monmouth set the tone by taking a 1-0 lead 30 seconds into the game. On a restart at the 25, Annick van Lange collected Frenken's pass outside the top-right of the circle and struck a reverse stick that Aufenacker redirected into the cage.
- In the 11th minute, van Lange advanced along the end line to the left of the cage and Woods made a sliding save with her leg pads stacked.
- Frenken extended the advantage to 2-0 at 10:54 when she scored from in front of the cage. Aufenracker'scentering pass from the left wing rolled past Woods' extended left leg to Frenken for the open-net goal.
- The Hawks had a 4-0 shot advantage and recorded the only corner in the opening 15 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
- Monmouth recorded the only shot and the only corner in a scoreless second quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Hawks earned another corner in the 33rd minute and Frenken's rising shot was blockered by Woods over the crossbar.
- Frenken corralled Julianna Carletti's long hit outside of the circle and blasted a low shot from the top-left into the cage to give Monmouth a 3-0 lead at 36:20.
- UNH responded with a goal less than two minutes later to trim the deficit to 3-1. From near midfield, freshman Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherlands) sent a bouncing long hit toward the top of the circle. Ecklels made one touch and then sent a shot past the charging O'Hogan into the cage at 37:53.
- In the 41st minute, Aufenacker ripped a low shot from the right wing, and Woods dropped to the turf to make a blocker save.
- Frenken's third goal of the game – this time on a direct shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner -- gave the Hawks a 4-1 lead at 43:58.
- Monmouth had a 4-1 shot advantage and 2-0 edge in corners in the third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Woods kept the 'Cats within three goals when she stopped van Lange's blast on a direct shot.
- Frenken struck again on a corner to give the visitors a 5-1 lead at 53:09. Insead of taking the direct shot, van Lange slipped a pass to the middle of the circle, where Frenken collected the ball, turned, a rolled a shot inside the left post.
- Senior captain Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) recorded two shots, one of which was a redirection stopped by Tarantino, in the final five minutes.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Monmouth finished with a 13-3 shot advantage and a 7-1 edge in corners.
- Neither team was credited with a defensive save.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- New Hampshire honored its five seniors – Conner Allen (Centreville, Md.), Megan Borneman (Crofton, Md.), captain Isabelle Danahy (Chelmsford, Mass.), Erin Malone (Crofton, Md.) and van den Brekel -- in a pre-game ceremony.
- In addition to Eckels, freshmen Gigi Fay (Lancaster, Mass.) and Mari Shea (Hampstead, N.H.), as well as Borneman, made their first career start.
- Freshman Reagan Calcari (St. Louis, Mo.) and Tredwell were the only Wildcat substitutes.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- Monmouth has won both matchups in the series; both by a 5-1 score, and both at UNH's Memorial Field.
