Sophomore Jamy Lum named America East Most Outstanding Swimmer
NEWARK, N.J. – The University of New Hampshire swimming and diving team won its America East record ninth conference championship on the final day America East Swimming Championships, winning five of six events on Sunday afternoon at the NJIT Events and Wellness Center on the campus of NJIT.
The Wildcats finished the championship with 817 points winning a total of 15 of 18 events in the three-day championship. UNH was followed by UMBC (621.5) and Vermont (613.5), in second and third, respectively. UNH led all three days of the championships with 252 points after day one and 536 points after the second day of action.
"We are really excited and relieved, I think the day started off great with Paige and Hannah going one and two in the 1000, which was great for them," said UNH head coach Josh Willman. "Everyone did great throughout the day, scoring points in the 100 free, the two backs, just a lot of great things were happening. The women are really excited about the win, they worked really hard for this chance and they deserved it, so we are really proud of ourselves."
Sophomore Jamy Lum (Honolulu, Hawaii) was named the championships Most Outstanding Swimmer with three individual titles in the 100 and 200 breast, along with the 500 free. The Wildcat coaches were named America East Coaching Staff of the Year for the 15th time under head coach Josh Willman. Freshman Abby McKinney (Westfield, N.J.) was named America East Rookie of the Year. Junior Anna Metzler (Regensburg, Germany) earned the Elite 18 award with the highest GPA (3.93 in Biomedical Science) at the America East Swimming and Diving Championships.
"It was very special for our team, especially because we had a lot of the setbacks we had in the fall," said Lum. "Despite all those challenges and obstacles, we came together and did something really amazing this year and it's just really exciting."
