Wildcats hold first-place in day two of America East Championships

UNH won five of seven events in the second day of the championship
NEWARK, N.J. – The University of New Hampshire women's swimming and diving team competed in the second day America East Swimming Championships, winning five of seven events on Saturday afternoon at the NJIT Events and Wellness Center.
The Wildcats hold the lead in the championship after the second day with 536 points, followed by Vermont (452.5) and UMBC (402). UNH will be aiming for its league record ninth America East Championship with six events up for grabs on Sunday.
"It was a great day, I was most nervous about this day most of all because their was a couple of events we only had two people in, but everyone really stepped up," said UNH head coach Josh Willman. "The 200 free relay at the beginning did really well, Paige Hillis and Paige Edmier scoring in the 400 IM was great. The biggest game changer was going one two in the 100 fly with Abby McKinney and Michaela Herwig."
The Wildcats opened the day with a victory in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:34.28 with the combination of freshman Abby McKinney (Westfield, N.J.), junior Anna Metzler (Regensburg, Germany), sophomore Olivia Stille (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior Cate Wardinski (Burke, Va.).
In the 400 IM, the Wildcats got solid contributions from senior Paige Hillis (Mississauga, Ont) and sophomore Paige Edmier (Bartlett, Ill.) with second (4:29.22) and third place (4:32.06) finishes, respectively.
UNH took the first two spots in the 100 fly with McKinney taking the gold at 55.74 for a new personal best, while classmate Michaela Herwig (Geneva, Ill.) also earned a new PR in the event with the silver for the Wildcats with a mark of 55.95.
Metzler took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.74 to pace the Wildcats in the event, while Stille and took second, posting a mark of 1:50.01.
Sophomore Jamy Lum (Honolulu, Hawaii) earned the victory in the 100 breast at 1:01.82, followed by senior Miranda Bacon (Scotia, N.Y.), who took third with a time of 1:03.75.
Metzler earned a silver medal in the 100 back with a mark of 55.86, while sophomore Madison Linstedt (Marion, Ohio) finished seventh at 58.21 for the Wildcats.
In the final event of the day, the Wildcats earned gold in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:43.86 with a combination of Metzler, Lum, McKinney and Stille for their fifth victory of the day.
UNH returns to action on Sunday, April 25 on the final day of the championship, which begins at 11am on ESPN+ from the NJIT Events and Wellness Center.
