UNH took three individual events and two relays on day one of the championship
NEWARK, N.J. -- The University of New Hampshire swimming and diving team opened the America East Swimming Championships winning all five events on Friday afternoon at the NJIT Events and Wellness Center.
The Wildcats are in the lead in the championship after day one with 252 points, followed by Vermont (234.5) and Binghamton (228).
"It's off to a great start, overall our times aren't at our best, but I think given the amount of training we have had, we are right where we need to be," said UNH head coach Josh Willman. "The women have come into this meet really focused on just racing and I think they have done that. It's pretty cool we won every event today, so as the events went by that kind of became a mantra for us to see what we could do."
UNH opened the day with a win in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.05 with the combination of freshman Michaela Herwig (Geneva, Ill.), sophomore Jamy Lum (Honolulu, Hawaii), Abby McKinney (Westfield, N.J.) and Olivia Stille (Stockholm, Sweden).
Lum came back and won the 500 free with a time of 4.52.99, as the Wildcats earned three of the top four spots in the event. Hannah Devine (Hamilton, N.J.) earned a impressive third-place finish (5:00.42) for a new personal record, while Herwig took fourth (5:02.09) in a very strong every for UNH.
Senior Miranda Bacon (Scotia, N.Y.) earned her first individual AE title with a victory in the 200 IM with a mark of 2:03.89, while classmate Paige Hillis (Mississauga, Ont.) took the fifth spot in the event with a time of 2:07.51.
Junior Cate Wardinski (Burke, Va.) also earned her first career AE individual title with a win in the 50 free (23.46), which was a new personal record. Stille placed third at 23.75 in the event to earn a bronze medal.
The Wildcats rounded out the day with a victory in the 800-yard free relay with a 7:27.93 comprised of junior Anna Metzler (Regensburg, Germany), Herwig, Hillis and Lum. Metzler posted a 1:48.42 split in the 800 and was just one two of 27 swimmers to earn a sub 1:52 split.
UNH returns to action on Saturday, April 24 on day two of the championship, which begins at 11am on ESPN+ from the NJIT Events and Wellness Center.
