Woods Stops Seven Shots in 4-1 Loss to Monmouth

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) made seven saves but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was defeated 4-1 by Monmouth University at Memorial Field on Friday afternoon.
Senior Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) scored UNH's goal in the seventh minute that tied the score at 1-1, but the Hawks went on to add another goal each of the remaining quarters for the win.
Monmouth goalie Kate O'Hogan was credited with four saves. Aylin Aufenacker led the attack with two goals and an assist. Hanna McKie and Lorane Vanneste also scored.

FIRST QUARTER
- The shots were even, 2-2, in the first 15 minutes.
- At 4:23, McKie scored a goal from the top of the circle into the low middle of the cage to give the Hawks 1-0 lead. It was her 10th goal of the season.
- The Wildcats responded with a goal by Caron at 6:40. Her shot from the right post snuck inside the far post with a creative assist from senior captain Tori Palumbo (Ayer, Mass) at the top of the circle.
- The score at the end of the quarter was 1-1.
SECOND QUARTER
- At 17:33, Vanneste scored on a direct shot off a corner to give Monmouth a 2-1 lead.
- It was a stalemate after that goal as neither team scored again before halftime.
- Monmouth had a 5-3 shot advantage in the second quarter.
- Both teams had three corners this quarter and the Hawks were the only team able to capitalize.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNH started the quarter applying a lot of offensive pressure on Monmouth but did not generate a shot.
- The visitors responded with immediate pressure that forced Woods to make a save in the 33rd minute.
- With 8:05 left in the quarter, Woods had a great save to deny Jess Tucker and keep the 'Cats within 2-1.
- At 38:23, Aufenacker scored her first of the season when she tipped Tucker's shot inside the left post to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
- Monmouth had a 4-3 shot advantage this quarter and the score after three quarters was 3-1 in favor of Monmouth.
FOURTH QUARTER
- At 47:25, Aufenacker scored an unassisted goal for her second tally of the game and the season to extend the margin to 4-1.
- With three minutes remaining in the quarter, redshirt senior Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) had a skilled shot that was about to go in the upper 90 of the left side of the goal but was saved by O'Hogan.
- Monmouth outshot UNH in this quarter 5-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Monmouth finished with a 16-11 shot advantage including 11-5 on goal.
- UNH had a 7-6 corner advantage.
- Monmouth had four assists and UNH had one.
- Junior Molly McAteer (Annapolis, Md.) and van den Brekel led UNH with three shots each.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Caron scored her second goal of the season and 23rd of her career. She now has 50 career points (23 goals, four assists).
- Palumbo recorded her fourth assist of the season.
