Mariani's Two Goals Leads UNH Past Merrimack, 6-1

Sophomore forward Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherlands) finished the game with four points on a goal and two assists. Senior captains Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands; one goal, one assist) and Isabelle Danahy (Chelmsford, Mass. ; two assists) also factored in multiple goals.
Junior back Molly McAteer (Annapolis, Md.) and junior forward Leah Glidden (Kittery, Maine) scored the other Wildcat goals..
The Wildcats heavily outshot the Warriors, 24-8, including 9-1 in the second quarter. Junior goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) was credited with one save to secure the victory.
Merrimack goalie Brooke Bolduc made nine saves and Lauren Burke scored a goal.
UNH improves to 4-10 overall and Merrimack falls to 1-13.
LOOKING AHEAD
- The Wildcats return to conference play and will face the University of Vermont on Friday, Oct. 22 (2 p.m.) in Burlington, Vt.
- The Wildcats' next home game is Senior Day on Oct. 24 against Columbia University.
FIRST QUARTER
- The shots were 4-2 in favor of the Wildcats, but neither team was able to find the back of the cage.
SECOND QUARTER
- At 16:59, McAteer broke the scoreless tie with her second goal of the season to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The battery of Lee and Danahy set up McAteer's direct shot on the penalty corner.
- van den Brekel's goal gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead at 27:35. The combination of junior Jaiden Wittel (Stroudsburg, Pa.) and Danahy set up that penalty-corner goal.
- The Wildcats were awarded five corners and dominated in shots this quarter with nine and Merrimack recorded one.
THIRD QUARTER
- Mariani opened the quarter with an unassisted goal to make the score 3-0 at 31:55.
- Lee increased the lead to four, which places her first in points amongst her team with 13 (4 goals, five assists).
- The shots were 6-3 in favor of the Wildcats.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Merrimack got on the scoreboard with a successful penalty stroke at 50:06. Lauren Burke fired the ball into the far-right corner of the net just past the outstretched pad of Woods.
- The Wildcats responded with Mariani's second of the game and third of the season at 51:38. Lee earned an assist, also her second of the game.
- Glidden scored UNH's sixth goal of the game and her first of the season with 1:52 remaining to solidify the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNH had an advantage in shots (24-8) and penalty corners (10-3).
- Van den Brekel led all players with eight shots. No other player had more than two.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Mariani's two goals and four points both matched personal bests; it marked the fourth time in her career she tallied two goals for four points.
- Lee recorded a career-high four points. The two assists matched her personal best.
- Lee now holds the most points and assists, and van den Brekel holds the top spot in the goal column with five.
- Danahy recorded her first career multiple-assist game.
- Seven Wildcats recorded a point in the win.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has won the two lifetime meetings against the Warriors and both took place on Memorial Field in the 2021 calendar year.
