Mariani Scores Goal in 2-1 Loss at UAlbany

ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) gave the University of New Hampshire field hockey team an early 1-0 lead, but UAlbany rallied for Sunday's 2-1 conference victory at Alumni Turf.
Mariani scored in the ninth minute, but the Great Danes answered with tallies in the 18th and 47th minutes.
UNH junior goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) was credited with five saves and UAlbany counterpart Lara Behn stopped three shots. Janelle Volk also made a defensive save for the Great Danes.
UNH is now 3-9 overall and 1-3 in America East while UAlbany moved to 6-7, 3-1.

- UNH plays two home games next weekend: Oct. 15 against Monmouth University and Oct. 17 vs. Merrimack College. Both games are 2 p.m. at Memorial Field.
FIRST QUARTER
- New Hampshire recorded a 2-1 shot advantage in the opening 15 minutes and scored on the only shot on goal.
- Mariani converted a pass from senior captain Tori Palumbo (Ayer, Mass.) into a goal and 1-0 lead for the Wildcats at 8:47.
- Senior Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) struck a shot wide of the cage in the 15th minute.
SECOND QUARTER
- UAlbany recorded all nine shots and both penalty corners in the second quarter.
- Floor de Ruiter leveled the score, 1-1, by lifting a shot under the crossbar at 17:11.
- Woods made the first of four saves in the quarter when she denied Isabella DelVecchio at 20:10.
- Woods turned aside Elaina Burchell in the 24th minute and then Lara Mortz one minute later to keep the score deadlocked at 1.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Wildcats responded with a 5-4 shot advantage, including 4-1 on goal, in the third quarter.
- UAlbany pressured in the opening minute but Woods once again denied DelVecchio.
- UNH gained momentum with a series of corners in the final five minutes of the quarter.
- On the first corner, the direct shot off the stick of senior captain Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) was saved by Behn.
- A second corner led to another van den Brekel shot as well as a shot by senior captain Isabelle Danahy (Chelmsford, Mass.) -- both stopped by Behn.
- And on the next corner, van den Brekel's shot beat Behn, but Volk was in position to make the defensive save and keep the score tied 1-1.
FOURTH QUARTER
- UNH generated the only two corners but UAlbany tallied the only two shots of the final frame.
- The Great Danes broke the tie and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal when they were awarded a penalty stroke converted by Alison Smisdom at 46:08.
- The 'Cats responded with corners in the 48th and 50th minutes, but neither produced a shot.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UAlbany finished with a 17-6 shot advantage that included a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.
- UNH generated five penalty corners; the Great Danes had four.
- van den Brekel led the Wildcats with three shots (all on goal).
UNH NOTEBOOK
- It was the first goal of the season and 11th career for Mariani.
- Palumbo moved into a tie for the team lead with three assists.
- van den Brekel has a team-high 41 shots; her 29 shots on goal are more than any other Wildcat has shots.
