THE MATCHUP
New Hampshire and Connecticut face off for a home-and-home series Jan. 15-16. UNH plays host to the Huskies on Friday (3 p.m.) and Saturday's rematch is at UConn's Freitas Ice Forum (6 p.m.). Both games can be seen on College SportsLive.
Spanning the past five seasons, this series is even at 5-5-0 and all four games last season were shutout victories (two by each team).
THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
New Hampshire (3-8-1 overall, 3-8-1 Hockey East) earned two points in last weekend's home-and-home series against third-ranked Northeastern University with a 3-1 road loss and 2-2 tie at home; the Wildcats won the shootout 1-0 to earn the extra point.
The Wildcats have a .500 record of 2-2-1 the past five games.
UNH's most recent win was Dec. 23, 2020: 6-2 at home vs. Holy Cross. Since then, the 'Cats are 0-2-1.
The 'Cats have lost Game 1 of all five weekend series, and that includes three at the Whittemore Center.
Through 12 games, UNH is averaging 2.08 goals on 25.6 shots per game while allowing 2.92 goals and 30.4 shots per game. The Wildcats' power play has scored one goal (two shorthanded goals allowed, including an empty-netter) in 43 opportunities (2.3%), and the penalty kill is 35-for-42 (83.3%).
NATIONAL LEADERBOARD
Freshman forward Nicole Kelly is No. 9 in the nation in freshmen points per game at 0.83; she has 10 points (3g, 7a) in 12 games. Kelly is one of just two rookies with double-digit points.
Junior Emily Rickwood has climbed to No. 20 in points per game for defensemen at 0.58 (seven points in 12 games).
UNH is 17th in offense (2.08 gpg) and 20th in scoring defense (2.92 gpg), as well as 18th in penalty kill (83.3%). [28 teams ranked]
Prior to the Dec. 30 game at Holy Cross, UNH's penalty kill was #10 (.903), but the Crusaders went 3-for-3 on the power play (including an empty-netter) in that game.
UConn's offense is No. 14 (2.44 gpg), the defense ranks 16th (2.33 gpg), power play is No. 7 (17.6%) and penalty kill is 24th (79.2%).
CLIMBING UNH'S ALL-TIME LISTS
Redshirt junior goalie Ava Boutilier became the fourth player in UNH history to record 2,000 career saves with the ninth of her 11 saves Dec. 23 against Holy Cross.
Boutilier ascended two places to #2 on the all-time list last weekend in the two-game series vs. Northeastern with 69 saves, which increased her career total to 2,096.
She passed Melissa Bourdon (2004-07) at 2,060 and Alicia Roberts (1998-2000) at 2,090. Jen Huggon (2000-03) holds the benchmark of 2,851.
Boutilier entered the Top 5 in career minutes Dec. 30 at Holy Cross. She enters the series vs. UConn at #4 with 4527:16. There is a significant jump to #3 on the list, Alicia Roberts (1998-2000) at 6526:33.
LAST WEEKEND RECAP
UNH earned two points in the Jan. 8-9 home-and-home series against No. 3 Northeastern with a 3-1 loss at Matthews Arena (which included an empty-net goal with 22.4 seconds remaining) followed by a 2-2 tie at the Whittemore Center; the Wildcats captured the shootout, 1-0, to earn the extra point in the league standings.
Ava Boutilier stopped 69 of 73 shots on goal for a .945 save percentage; players are not credited with individual stats during a shootout, but she did stop four NU shooters (the other's attempt was off target).
In the loss, Boutilier made a season-high 39 saves, including a personal-best single period total of 22 in the third period -- 14 of which came during a five minute power play.
Boutilier made 30 saves, including four in overtime, to backbone the Wildcats to the 2-2 tie that ended a streak of 10 consecutive losses to Northeastern.
Junior defenseman Emily Rickwood recorded an assist and four blocks in both games last weekend.
Junior defenseman Maddie Truax blocked 10 shots in the weekend series. She recorded six blocks last Friday and followed that with four last Saturday.
Junior forward Paige Rynne, who hadn't seen game action since Dec. 11, made an impactful return Jan. 9 by scoring the only goal in the five-round shootout.
Freshman forward Brianna Brooks scored a goal in her return to the lineup Jan. 8; she was a DNP the previous four games.
