New Hampshire tied with UMBC with 24 points after day one of the America East Championships
BOSTON – University of New Hampshire senior thrower Zachary Astle(Newbury, N.H.) claimed his fourth America East gold medal on Friday as the Wildcats' men's track & field team competed in day one of the 2020 America East Indoor Championships at Boston University.
Astle took his first weight throw championship of his career, with a throw of 63'9.5". He was joined on the podium by junior Jacob Dearborn(Wolfeboro, N.H.) in fifth and senior Kyle Faucher(Danville, N.H.) in eighth. Both Dearborn and Faucher set personal bests in the event, Dearborn at 52'2.5", Faucher at 48'2".
Astle, who is a two-time defending shot put champion at the America East indoor meet, will defend his title on Saturday.
The Wildcats are in fourth place in the team standings, tied with UMBC, at 24 points. The top three teams after the first day of competition are UMass Lowell in first at 33 points, Binghamton in second at 30, and Stony Brook in third with 25.
MEET RESULTS:
Two Wildcats are in the middle of the heptathlon at this years' America East Championships; with four of seven events completed, sophomore Brian Genet(Merrimack, N.H.) is in fifth at 2587 points, and junior Michael Monahan(Tewksbury, Mass.) is in 11th at 2326.
Monahan will also compete in the 60-meter hurdle finals on Saturday, after qualifying with a personal best time of 8.28 seconds, finishing third overall.
In the long jump, two school record holders found their way to the podium; sophomore Nate Hobbs(Peabody, Mass.) took fifth place with a distance of 23'2", and junior Jordan Buckmire(Nashua, N.H.) took eighth with a distance of 22'5.25".
The distance medley relay team of freshman Dillon Adamy(Clinton, N.J.), senior Matthew Adams(Concord, N.H.), freshman William Curran(Old Saybrook, Conn.) and junior Dylan McLaughlin(Moultonborough, N.H.) took fifth overall with UNH's best time in the event this season: 10:09.28.
