Carbone's Career-High 22 Points Propels 'Cats Past Hartford, 67-63, in OT

DURHAM, N.H. – Mark Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored a career-high 22 points to propel the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to Thursday night's 67-63 overtime win against the University of Hartford at Lundholm Gym.
Carbone hit 3 of 7 3-point attempts and also went 9-for-10 on free throws, including 5 of 6 in the extra session. Sean Sutherlin (New Brighton, Minn.) recorded his team-leading eighth double-double of the season by scoring 13 points pulling down 17 rebounds. Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) matched his career high of 11 rebounds and scored seven points.
Hartford was led by Malik Ellison (28 points, 13 rebounds) and Traci Carter (19p, 10r).
UNH improved to 9-2 at home as well as 12-13 overall and 5-7 in America East. Hartford, which recorded a 61-52 home win vs. the Wildcats in early January, is now 14-14, 7-6.

FIRST HALF
- The Wildcats started strong against the Hawks, leading 6-1 just three minutes into the game.
- However, the Hawks came back to lead the 'Cats, 8-6, at the first media timeout.
- Hartford extended its advantage to 20-8 at 9:33.
- UNH answered with a 13-0 run to take a 21-20 lead on a left-elbow jumper by Meekness Payne (Phoenix, Ariz.) at 1:53. Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas), Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) and Carbone each hit a 3-pointer during that spurt.
- Carter hit a 3-ball with 1:33 left in the half to put the Hawks back in front, 23-21, heading into halftime.
SECOND HALF
- With UNH trailing 30-25, Carbone's pull-up jumper sparked a 10-1 surge that gave the 'Cats a 35-31 lead at 12:30. That run was capped by consecutive 3-pointers just 69 seconds apart from Maultsby and Carbone.
- The margin remained within four points as the score advanced to 44-41 in favor of Hartford at the last media timeout of the half (at 3:45).
- Carbone hit another clutch 3-pointer to tie the score, 44-44, at 3:33.
- With just one minute on the clock, Sutherlin tied it yet again for the Wildcats at 51-51.
- After Hartford had an empty possession, Maultsby missed a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining. Hartford called time out, but Carter's step-back jumper caromed off the rim to send the game into overtime.
OVERTIME
- The visitors opened the extra session with a 6-2 run to build a 57-53 advantage at 3:31.
- Carbone hit two foul shots, then Sutherlin's layup tied the score, 57-57, at 1:54.
- Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) drilled a 3-pointer to give the 'Cats a 60-57 lead at 1:01, but it was short-lived as Carter immediately resonded with a 3-ball.
- The Hawks called a timeout, but Sutherlin's pull-up jumper put UNH back in front, 62-60, with 34 seconds remaining.
- Maultsby grabbed a defensive rebound at the other end of the court and was fouled. He hit both foul shots to extend the margin to 64-60 with 21 seconds left.
- After Carter missed two free throws, Carbone hit two to give New Hampshire a 66-60 lead with 10 seconds on the clock.
- Hartford quickly pushed the ball upcourt and Carter hit a 3-pointer, but Carbone was fouled and hit 1 of 2 free throws with three seconds left to secure the win.
- The 'Cats recorded eight rebounds in OT, compared to Hartford's one.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 28-47 lifetime record against Hartford.
- The Hawks had won each of the past six meetings, including this year's previous meeting in West Hartford.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- New Hampshire is 2-1 in overtime games this season. All three overtime games have been at Lundholm Gym.
- Carbone's previous career high was 14 points. That mark was established last March at Maine and matches this past November at St. John's.
- Carbone played 30 minutes, 46 seconds off the bench and committed just one turnover.
- The 17 rebounds marked the second-highest total for Sutherlin, who pulled down 20 boards vs. Bryant.
- Sutherlin played 40+ minutes for the fourth time this season with a season-high 42:30. He played 41:33 in the OT win against Bryant University.
- Maultsby previously recorded 11 rebounds at American University in November 2018.
- Maultsby, Lester and Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) tied for the team lead with three assists.
- This marked the second time this season UNH overcame a halftime deficit to win; the previous time was the 77-69 win at Binghamton University.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- New Hampshire recorded a season-low five turnovers.
- The Wildcats came back from a 12-point deficit as they trailed Hartford 20-8 in the first half.
- UNH's highest lead of the game was six points, and that came in the closing seconds of OT.
- The Wildcats recorded a 30.3 field goal percentage (23-76) while Hartford recorded 34.5 percent (20-58).
- The Wildcats outscored Hartford 30-28 in the second half.
- UNH finished with 55 rebounds, including 18 on the offensive glass. It was the third highest total of the season and fourth time the 'Cats topped 50 boards.
