Metzler Breaks Record, 'Cats Dominate Day 2 of AE Championships

WORCESTER , Mass. – Anna Metzler (Regensburg, Germany) broke a conference and school record for the second consecutive day on Friday night to propel the University of New Hampshire women's swimming and diving team to first place midway through the four-day America East Championships, which are being held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Sports & Recreation Center.
Metzler led a 1-2-3 Wildcats finish in the 500-yard freestyle with her record-breaking time of 4 minutes, 46.95 seconds.
Allison Stefanelli (Loudonville, N.Y.) won the 3-meter dive for the third consecutive year and completed a first-place sweep of this year's two diving events.
Corinne Carbone (Medway, Mass.) gave the 'Cats six wins through six events with the fastest time of 2:00.14 in the 200 individual medley.
New Hampshire amassed 240 points Friday night to surge to the top of the seven-team standings with a two-day total of 345 points. The Wildcats are followed by Binghamton University (240 points) and UMBC (236).
The four-day America East Championships continue Feb. 15 and conclude Feb. 16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stefanelli, who took top honors in Thursday's 1-meter dive, accrued 264.40 points to outdistance herself from the runner-up by 38.7 points; in comparison, the point differential from second to seventh place was 37.55 points.
- Francesca Femia (Manlius, N.Y.) took seventh in the 1-meter dive with an aggregate score of 188.15 points.
- In the 500 free, Metzler was followed by Jamy Lum (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Audrey Tirrell (Gaithersburg, Md.) to give the 'Cats 53 points in the event. Lum was runner-up with a time of 4:51.16. Tirrell touched the wall in 4:58.25.
- Metzler broke the record of former Wildcat Jess Harper (4:48.29 in 2016).
- UNH took four of the top five spots in the 200 IM to amass 66 more points. Carbone led the way and Miranda Bacon (Scotia, N.Y.) placed second in 2:03.03. Emily Dolloff-Holt (Woodland Park, Colo.) finished fourth in 2:04.17, one second ahead of teammate Paige Hillis (Mississauga, Ontario).
- New Hampshire recorded the third and fourth fastest times in the 50 free. Cate Wardinski (Burke, Va.) took third place in 23.87 seconds, just .01-of-a-second ahead of fellow Wildcat Olivia Stille (Stockholm, Sweden).
- UNH missed another first-place finish by .03-of-a-second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.16; UVM won in 1:35.13. Stille and Wardinski swam the first two legs, followed by Cassidy Wilson (Toledo, Ohio), and Carbone swam the anchor leg in 23.49 seconds.
