'Cats Extend Win Streak to Five With 4-0 Win at Bryant

Four Wildcats Score; Woods and Simkevich Combine to Shut Out Bulldogs
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four Wildcats recorded a goal, two more tallied an assist and two goalkeepers combined for a shutout as the University of New Hampshire field hockey team recorded a 4-0 victory against Bryant University at Golderbeger Family Field on Friday afternoon.
Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.), Isabelle Danahy (Chelmsford, Mass.), Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) and Bailey Fanikos (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored the goals for UNH, which extended its win streak to five games to improve to 5-3 overall.
Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) recorded three saves in 57:59 of action and Rachel Simkevich (Londonderry, N.H.) was not credited with a stop in the final 2:01.
Bryant goalie Marijn Jaarsma made four saves. The Bulldogs are 0-9.

1st QUARTER
- New Hampshire recorded a 6-0 shot advantage in the opening 15 minutes.
- Mariani quickly gave UNH a 1-0 lead on a goal 63 seconds into the game. She intercepted a pass at the 25, advanced into the circle at the top-right, then turned at the end line and beat the goalie.
2nd QUARTER
- The Wildcats tallied a 4-1 edge in shots in the scoreless second quarter.
- Bryant generated a dangerous scoring chance in the 22nd minute, but Aisling Madden's shot from the left side rolled wide of the far post.
- The Bulldogs threatened again in the closing minute on a UNH turnover in the Wildcats' defensive end, but Maura Verleg (Geldrop, Netherlands) backtracked into the circle and tackled the ball away to prevent a shot.
3rd QUARTER
- It took New Hampshire just 54 seconds to strike in the second half as the 'Cats capitalized on a corner.
- Caron inserted the ball to the top for Tori Palumbo (Ayer, Mass.). van den Brekel pushed the ball to the left, where Kayla Sliz (Ajax, Ontario) fired a shot that was stopped by Jaarsma. Caron corralled the rebound and jammed the ball under the goalie. Danahy, positioned at the goalmouth, swept the ball into the open cage for a 2-0 lead.
- Bryant generated a corner in the 33rd minute and Isa Oldekamp's hard shot from the top-left was stopped by Woods.
- UNH converted a corner into a goal and 3-0 lead at 34:25 when the battery of Caron-to-Verleg set up van den Brekel's blast from the top of the circle that went into the cage.
- In the 39th minute, Tia Raspante (Sandwich, Mass.) led a 2-on-1 into the top of the circle. She pulled the ball to the top-right side and struck a shot that rolled wide of the near post.
4th QUARTER
- Bryant recorded three of its five shots in the final frame and outshot the visitors 3-2.
- Mariani initiated the scoring sequence on UNH's fourth goal with a pass from the right wing toward the top of the circle. Fanikos collected the pass, beat a defender and her reverse-stick shot went into the cage at 50:22.
- Woods denied Taryn Rauff on a penalty-corner shot in the 53rd minute, then turned aside Kylie Nelson on the right doorstep in the 57th minute to preserve the shutout.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- This five-game win streak is UNH's longest since the 2013 squad won eight straight.
- This is the Wildcats' first shutout of the year.
- Fanikos has recorded a point (1g, 1a) in both games she has played this season.
- It was Danahy's first goal of the year (third career).
- Verleg is now one of three 'Cats with multiple assists. Danahy and Sliz are the others.
- Woods has a 5-1 record with a 1.80 GAA and .700 save percentage.
- The five shots by Bryant is the lowest total by a UNH opponent in 2019.
