Guadarrama's Career-High 28 Points Lifts 'Cats Past Crusaders, 87-83

DURHAM, N.H. – Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to Saturday afternoon's 87-83 win against College of the Holy Cross at Lundholm Gym.
It was the second double-double in as many games of the season for Guadarrama, who was also credited with three assists and three steals. Sean Sutherlin (New Brighton, Minn.) also recorded his second double-double of the year with 11 points and 11 rebounds; he also had a game-high six assists and two steals.
Mark Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the last 13 seconds to finish with 13 points and secure the victory.
UNH improves to 2-0 overall and Holy Cross is now 0-2.

FIRST HALF
- UNH took an 11-3 lead into the first media timeout at 15:59 and pushed the margin to double digits, 17-7, on a 3-pointer by Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) at 14:46.
- Holy Cross rallied to tie the score, 17-17, at 11:28 but Carbone made a 3-pointer at the other end of the floor and the Crusaders never pulled even the rest of the way.
- Leading 20-19 at 10:40, the 'Cats went on a 13-5 run to build a 33-24 lead at 7:38. Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) made a pair of 3's during the spurt.
- Holy Cross pulled within four points four times and UNH took a 46-40 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF
- UNH led 59-54 at 14:49, then neither team scored for nearly two minutes until HC's Joe Pridgen made 1 of 2 free throws at 13:18, and then his 3-pointer lifted the Crusaders within 59-58 at 12:43.
- Guadarrama scored UNH's next five points as the lead extended to 64-60 at 11:33, and then Carbone connected again from beyond the 3-point line to advance the score to 67-60 at 11:01.
- Blake Verbeek's basket lifted Holy Cross within one point, 73-72, at 5:51.
- A putback by Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) made it 75-72 at 5:15, and that was also the score at the final media timeout at 3:57.
- Leading 79-74 with two minutes remaining, UNH got the defensive stops to preserve the lead down the stretch. It started with a steal by Guadarrama, and then the Crusaders missed four consecutive field goal attempts.
- Ryan Wade was fouled on a 3-pointer and hit all three foul shots to trim the deficit to 82-77 with 13 seconds to play.
- Carbone was fouled, but calmly hit both free throws to establish a seven-point lead.
- Holy Cross hit a jumper and once again fouled Carbone, but he made both shots from the foul line to give the 'Cats an 86-80 lead with five seconds left.

- UNH has a 13-24 lifetime record against Holy Cross but has won three of the last four meetings

- Five Wildcats scored in double digits. Guadarrama (28) was followed by Hopkins (15), Carbone (13), Martinez (11) and Sutherlin (11).
- Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) made his season debut. He played 11 minutes off the bench; his stat line included one rebound and one assist.

- UNH never trailed after Martinez drained a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game.

- UNH recorded the scoring edge for points in the paint (32-24), off turnovers (16-7), and second-chance points (14-6).
