Lester Records Double-Double in 74-61 Loss at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. – Mark Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) matched his career high of 14 points and Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) recorded a double-double for the Wildcats, but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was defeated 74-61 by St. John's University at Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday night.
Carbone led four UNH players in double-digit scoring with 14 points. Lester netted 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his second career double-double; he also matched his personal best with a team-high four assists.
Sean Sutherlin (New Brighton, Minn.) and Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Guadarrama also had five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
In a battle of previously unbeaten teams, UNH is now 2-1 and St. John's is 3-0.
UP NEXT
New Hampshire continues its stretch of four consecutive road games Nov. 16 (4 p.m.) at Boston University.
The Wildcats' next home game is Nov. 26 (7 p.m.) vs. Bryant.

FIRST HALF
* There were six lead changes in the first three minutes of the game.
* UNH scored 11 consecutive points -- Guadarram and aCarbone each hit a 3-pointer during the run -- to build a double-digit lead, 18-8, at 12:12.
* St. John's made one of its three first-half 3-pointers to end the run, but the Wildcats responded with a driving dunk by Sutherlin and 3-pointer by Lester to extend the advantage to 23-11 at 10:26.
* The Red Storm went on a 12-3 run to trim the deficit to 26-23 at 5:48.
* Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) and Carbone hit back-to-back 3's to push the margin back to nine points, 32-23, at 4:48.
* Trailing 34-29, SJU scored the last six points of the first half to create the first tie score of the game, 34-34, with 1:59 on the clock and take a 36-34 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF
* Guadarrama scored the first four points of the half on a pair of layups to put UNH back in front, 38-36.
* With the score tied at 42, St. John's went on an 11-1 run to build a 53-43 lead at 12:00.
* Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) made a pair of free throws and Hopkins hit a backdoor layup to lift the 'Cats within 53-47 at 9:48.
* Guadarrama's 3-pointer trimmed the deficit to 57-54 at 6:37, but the Red Storm scored 12 consecutive points to build a 69-54 advantage at 4:36.
* UNH did not get closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Tuesday night's game was the first ever matchup between the New Hampshire and St. John's men's basketball programs.

* UNH has had at least four double-digit scorers all three games.

* It was a tale of two halves for the Wildcats, who shot 46.4% from the floor (13-28) in the first half and that included 50% (7-14) from 3-point range. The 'Cats shot 30% in the second half (9-30) with 10% on 3's (1-10).
* UNH finished with a .379 field goal percentage, including .333 on 3-pointers (8-24).
* Hopkins played lockdown defense on SJU's Mustapha Heron, who entered the game averaging 27.5 points per game but was held to five points on 2-for-12 shooting.
* The Wildcats held St. John's to 39.4% shooting from the floor (28-71).
* UNH made 9 of 18 free throws in comparison to the Red Storm's 11-for-18 effort from the foul line.
