Hopkins Makes Seven 3's, Scores Career-High 23 Points in 69-58 Loss at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) scored 23 points and David Watkins (Dorchester, Mass.) recorded a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds, but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was defeated 69-58 by Binghamton University at Events Center on Saturday afternoon.
Hopkins made 8 of 12 field goals, including 7 of 9 3-pointers, to finish with a game- and career-high 23 points. Watkins recorded a double-double for the second consecutive game -- and third of his career; his 14 rebounds marked a personal best, as did the 36 minutes played. Hopkins and Watkins tied for the team lead in assists (three).
Binghamton was led by Sam Sessoms (21 points), Caleb Stewart (15) and J.C. Show (10). Chancellor Barnard finished with eight points and team-high 11 rebounds.
UNH is 2-12 overall and 0-1 in America East. Binghamton improved to 5-11, 1-0.

FIRST HALF
* Leading 7-6 at the first media timeout (at 14:50), Binghamton went on an 11-0 run to build an 18-6 advantage.
* Hopkins and Watkins netted back-to-back 3-pointers, then Mark Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) converted a three-point play to lift the Wildcats within 18-15 at 9:50.
* Hopkins' third 3-ball of the game tied the score, 18-18, at 9:20, but the Bearcats scored the next 13 points to take a 31-18 lead at 4:58.
* Hopkins made a 3-pointer from the right corner to stop the run at 4:33 and, after Binghamton made one foul shot, David Hall (Raleigh, N.C.) drilled a 3-ball from the top of the key to trim the deficit to 32-24 at 3:37.
* The home team answered with a 3-pointer, but UNH held the Bearcats scoreless the last three minutes of the half to close within 35-33 at halftime.
* Watkins ignited the run with a transition layup that was followed by Hopkins' fifth 3-pointer of the half. Carbone hit a pull-up jumper from the right elbow with 52 seconds on the clock, then the hi-low combination of Hall to Watkins produced a layup at the buzzer.
SECOND HALF
* After the Wildcats made a defensive start at the outset of the second half, Carbone's basket tied the game, 35-35, at 19:12.
* Binghamton score the next 10 points, however, to take a 45-35 lead at 16:10.
* Jordan Reed (Lucas, Texas) hit a 3-pointer and Hopkins banked in a runner off the glass to quickly lift UNH within 45-40 at 13;48.
* Hopkins' sixth 3-pointer ignited a 9-4 spurt that ended with his seventh 3-ball at 8:45 and made the score 51-49 at 8:45.
* Reed's three-point play lifted New Hampshire within 56-52 at 6:03, but the Bearcats scored the next six points to reestablish lead, 62-52, at 3:57.
* Watkins drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key and UNH immediately called time out with 3:44 on the clock.
* The Wildcats would not score again until the closing seconds, however, as Binghamton pulled away down the stretch for the 11-point win.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
* Binghamton had lost nine straight to New Hampshire prior to Saturday. UNH leads the all-time series 19-18.
UNH NOTEBOOK
* Hopkins' seven 3-pointers are the most by a Wildcat since Feb. 9, 2017, when Daniel Dion also made seven 3's at Vermont.
* Hopkins played 37 minutes, one less than his career high.
* Watkins surpassed his previous high of 11 rebounds that he had matched one game earlier at Dartmouth College.
* UNH's 13 3-pointers matches the season high set in the opener vs. Rivier.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
* Binghamton shot 50 percent from the floor (22-44) and that included 42.1 percent on 3-pointers (8-19).
* UNH made 38.9 percent of its field goal attempts (21-54); the Wildcats were 13-for-31 (41.9%) on 3-pointers.
* There was a 26-6 discrepancy in free throws. UNH was 3-for-6 from the foul line and the Bearcats were 17-for-26.
* Binghamton had a 33-26 rebounding advantage. The Bearcats committed one fewer turnover (9-10).
* The home team outscored the visitors 22-12 in the paint.
