‘Cats Run Past Crusaders in Home Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's track & field team took on Holy Cross in the 2019 home opener of its indoor track season. The Wildcats had a total of 13 individual winners and two relay wins to take down Holy Cross by a team score of 244-178.
UNH excelled in all areas of the meet with winners on the track and in the throwing/jumping events.

The 'Cats are back in full swing as next weekend they host Maine and Vermont next Saturday, January 26. The weekend kicks off with the John Thomas Terrier Invitational on Friday, January 25 hosted by Boston University, with select New Hampshire athletes competing.
RESULTS - TRACK:
Of those 13 individual winners, eight came from the track events.
Thomas Chant (North Conway, N.H.) took the 55 meter dash 6.66 seconds, setting a new personal best in the event.
The first of many one-two finishes for UNH, Joseph Hook (Rockaway, N.J.) took first in the 200m run in 23.70 seconds, just missing his personal best by less than a second¸ followed by Chant who finished in 24.42 seconds.
Casey Farrell (Glastonbury, Conn.) took first in the 400m run with a time of 51.94, a new personal best.
In the 500m run, Christopher Pinkham and Ian Daly (Meredith, N.H.) had a one-two finish with Pinkham winning the event in 1:07.28 and Daly finishing in 1:08.55. Both finishes were personal bests.
William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.) took first in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.05, followed by Matthew Adams (Concord, N.H.) in second in 1:59.16.
Brett Hoerner (Manchester, N.H.) and Aaron Dobe (Contoocook, N.H.) led the way of what was a seven-Wildcat top finish in the 1000m run. Hoerner's winning time was 2:29.08 and Dobe finished in 2:34.30.
In the mile run, Aidan Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) took first in 4:19.15 , followed by James Wilkes (Concord, N.H.) who finished just milliseconds behind him, 4:19.43. The near-photo finish was good for personal bests for both runners.
Rounding out the track runners was Timothy Kenefick (Guilford, Conn.) who took first in the 3000m run, finishing in 8:32.75. The runner up was Samuel Lanternier (Derry, N.H.) who finished in 8:49.20.
THROWS:
Once again leading the charge for New Hampshire was Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) taking first in the shot put and weight throw events. Astle's best throw in the shot put was 52 feet, four inches and his weight throw came in at 57'8.25". Following behind Astle in the shot put was Jacob Dearborn (Wolfeboro, N.H.) who took second with 48'4", and in the weight throw by Edward Speidel (Dover, N.H.) whose longest throw went 53'8.25".
JUMPS/VAULTS:
Newcomers led the way in the jumps and vaults; Emmanuel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) took first in the high jump with a height of 6'4.25". In the pole vault, William Shepard (Milford, N.H.) vaulted 13'9.25".
Jordan Buckmire (Nashua, N.H.) won the triple jump with a distance of 46'1.25", and also scored in the long jump with 20'4.25", taking second place.
RELAYS
Two Wildcat teams took first in the relays:
- In the 4x400, the team of Rob Franger (Shewsbury, Mass.), Hinds, Daly, and Pinkham took first in 3:31.72.
- The team of James Busi (Plastow, N.H.), Dobe, Hoerner and Jack Crawford (Mansfield, Mass.) took first in the 4x800 relay in 8:09.27.
