Wildcats Tune Up for Conference Championships Next Weekend

DURHAM, N.H. – With the track & field championship season approaching, the University of New Hampshire men's and women's teams will head to Amherst, Mass. for the annual pre-conference meet hosted by the University of Massachusetts.
The meet will feature several New England schools all preparing for their respective conference championships which are slated for the following weekend. In last years' pre-conference meet, the Wildcats took second on the women's side, and fourth on the men's, en route to a runner-up finish for the women at the America East Championships, and a third place finish for the men.
On the men's side, America East 2018 Indoor Champions Joel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) and Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) will be looking to return to the America East Championship meet next weekend in top form, using this meet to continue improving their techniques. Astle is coming off a strong week at the Holy Cross Classic and George Davis Invitationals, winning the shot put event at both meets with distances of 52 feet, 7.25 inches at Holy Cross and 53'4.5" at the Geroge Davis. Nkounkou took two first place finishes at the George Davis Invitational, winning the long jump with a distance of 22'0.75", and winning the 110 meter hurdles in 15.14 seconds.

The championship season starts next weekend with the America East Championships taking place May 5 and 6 at UMBC. Then the Wildcats will head to the New England Outdoor Championships hosted by Dartmouth on May 11 and 12, followed by the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. Those who qualify will then head to the NCAA Regional Meet in Tampa, Florida, which takes place May 24 through 26. The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon June 6 through 9.
LAST TIME OUT:
At the Holy Cross Classic, the throwers once again shined for UNH. The Wildcats were led by Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) who took first in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 7.25 inches. Astle won his fourth straight shot put event, followed by Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) who took second with a throw of 51'5.5".
Astle and Ritzo finished second and third in the discus with throws of 156'9" and 153'2" respectively. The throw for Astle was a new personal best, which was set last season at the New England Outdoor championships.
The Wildcats also took runner up in the hammer and javelin throws. Jon Chapman (Newport, R.I.) set a new personal best, taking second in the hammer throw with a distance of 184'1". Eric Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) finished behind him in third with 175'1". In the javelin, Kyle Faucher (Danville, N.H.) was the runner up with a throw of 182'2", a new personal best for the sophomore. Ritzo took third in the javelin with 165'10".
