Wildcats Take Runner Up at UMass Pre-Conference Meet

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of New Hampshire men's and women's track & field teams both took second place at the annual pre-conference meet hosted by the University of Massachusetts.
Both the men's and women's teams took second to UMass, the men's team with 158 points to UMass' 164, and the women's team at 174 points to UMass' 215. The men's field also saw UMass Lowell, Dartmouth, Vermont, and Maine, while the women's field included just UMass Lowell, Maine, and Dartmouth. The meet saw several Wildcats making their mark before the conference championship meet next weekend at UMBC.
On the men's side, the Wildcats were once again lead by the throwers and other field events. Jon Chapman (Newport, R.I.) took first in the hammer throw with a distance of 186'4", a new personal best in the event. He was followed by Eric Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) who threw 177'1".
Over in the discuss, Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) won the event with a throw of 163'4", setting a new personal best. Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) took runner up in the shot put throwing 54'8.25". In the long jump, Joel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) tied for first place, jumping 22'10.5".

The championship season starts next weekend with the America East Championships taking place May 5 and 6 at UMBC. Then the Wildcats will head to the New England Outdoor Championships hosted by Dartmouth on May 11 and 12, followed by the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. Those who qualify will then head to the NCAA Regional Meet in Tampa, Florida, which takes place May 24 through 26. The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon June 6 through 9.

- Nkounkou also took third in the 110m hurdles, leading a pack of three Wildcats as he finished in 15.21 seconds. Finishing in fourth was Christopher Gansfuss (Flemington, N.J.) setting a new personal best at 15.62 seconds and in fifth was Andrew Matteucci (Andover, Mass.) in 15.64 seconds.
- Frederick Schaake took third in the high jump setting a new personal best with 5'11.25".
- Jordan Buckmire and Ryan Dutille took third and fourth in the triple jump, Buckmire with a jump of 44'11.75" and Dutille with 41'7.25".
- Noah Malo (Monson, Mas.) took third in the 100m dash in 11.81 seconds, followed by Schaake at 12 seconds.
- A relay team of John Crawford (Mansfield, Mass.), Joseph Hook (Rockaway, N.J.), Alexander Karam (Scarborough, Maine), and Cody Symonds (Alton, N.H.) took third in the 4x400 relays in 3 minutes, 27.96 seconds.
