Wildcats Compete at Providence, at Home This Weekend

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire track & field teams return to action this Friday and Saturday, April 13 and 14 in two meets, the Ocean State Invitational hosted by Providence on Friday, and the Wildcat Invitational at home on Saturday.
The Wildcats will send six athletes down to Providence for the Ocean State Invitational running Friday night through Saturday. UNH will be one of 14 teams to compete in the meet.
Five athletes from the women's team will compete in the mile and the 5000m run, competing against both collegiate and professional standouts which includes four All-Americans. In the mile, the Wildcats will send Angelyn Masters (Bangor, Maine) Meg Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) and Hannah Kimball (Atkinson, N.H.). Masters is coming off a runner up finish at the Colonial Relays in the 3000m, and helping the 1600 sprint medley relay team take third. Champagne and Kimball are coming off of first place finishes in the home opener, Champagne winning the 3000m and the 1500m, while Kimball took first in the 800m.
The women's track & field team will also send two athletes for the 5000m, Kayla Farren (Nashua, N.H.), and Caroline Mahoney (Bedford, N.H.). Farren took third in the 1500m in UNH's home opener, while Mahoney took ninth.
Back home in Durham, the remaining Wildcats will host the Wildcat Invitational, an all-day event on Saturday. The Wildcats are coming off a weekend where the men's team won the home meet by a convincing 43 points, while the women's team was edged out by one point, finishing in second.
Events will begin at 11 A.M. with the men's javelin throw, the women's hammer throw, the men's shot put, as well as both long jumps and the women's pole vault. The events continue on from there with the women's and men's events alternating in the throws and pole vault. The track events will begin at 1 P.M. with the men's steeple chase. LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats were edged out by one point, relinquishing first place to Maine by a score of 166-165. The 'Cats took four of the top five spots in the javelin, with the winner being UNH's Natalie Howes (Londonderry, N.H.) who threw 115'07". The Wildcats then finished three, four, five with Carly Orlacchio (Cromwell, Conn.) taking third with a throw of 110', Alyssa Colbert (Smithfield, R.I.) in fourth with 109'4", and Alexandra Toback posting her first collegiate result, a throw of 107'7" landing her in fifth.
Emily Wernig (Gilford, N.H.) won the discus throw with a best throw of 129'9". Her personal best in the event is a UNH record of 148'1" set in 2016. The runner up was Colbert, who finished with 117'10".
New Hampshire continued to dominate the track, with Meg Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) taking first in the 1500m, posting a time of 4:46.91, just six seconds behind her personal best set at last years pre-conference meet. She was followed by Madeleine Brandon (Killingworth, Conn.) who had a runner-up time of 4:52.36. Kayla Farren (Nashua, N.H.) finished in third with a new personal best time in the event, 4:56.40 and Shannon Stang (Medford, N.J.) rounded out the top five finishing in 5:05.38.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Maria Virga took first in 15.04 seconds, and the 3000 meter run was won by Champagne who finished in 10:21.73. Hannah Kimball (Atkinson, N.H.) won the 800m run in 2:19.78, just 2.1 seconds off her personal best time in the event.
