Shanahan’s throw of 72 feet, 8.5 inches clinches his first All-American standing.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In his first ever NCAA Indoor Championship, senior Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) earned All-American status as he took seventh in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championship at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas on Saturday afternoon.
Shanhan's throw of 72'8.5" earned him seventh place, a spot on the pedestal, and his first ever All-American designation. The throw is his second best of the season, just edging out his throw of 72'8" which won him an America East Championship, and a full foot behind his best throw of 73'10.75" at the ECAC/IC4A Championship.
The winning throw reached 78'9.75", and was thrown by David Lucas of Penn State. Shanahan was a foot behind the sixth place thrower Denzel Comenentia of Georgia, who was just under Mike's ECAC championship throw with a distance of 73'8". Shanahan also just edged out the final scorer, Alan Zapalac of Texas, who finished a half-inch behind Shanahan with 72'8".
Shanahan had never qualified for a final at the NCAA level before Saturday, getting to the regional level twice in outdoors in the hammer throw, but fouling in his first appearance and placing 32nd in his second regional appearance with a 199'8" throw in 2016.
UP NEXT:
Shanahan and the Wildcats only have two weeks off before the outdoor track and field season begins with the Colonial Relays at William and Mary on Friday, March 30, followed by a home dual meet with Maine on Saturday, March 31.
SHANAHN'S 2018 INDOOR SEASON
Shanahan competed in nine weight throw finals this season; his seventh place finish was his first time not finishing first in a weight throw even this season.
